Chelsea also looking to sign Thuram: Good decision?

Chelsea are reportedly interested in striking a deal with Borussia Monchengladbach for forward Marcus Thuram in this winter transfer window.

The Blues’ injury problems became from bad to worse when Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic were forced off with hamstring issue and a knock in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League. Injuries to Sterling and Pulisic—two key players under Graham Potter—may force the club to enter the market for a forward.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Chelsea are pushing to sign Borussia Monchengladbach star Marcus Thuram, as co-owner Todd Boehly looks to splash the cash in order to revive the club’s fortunes.

Thuram, 25, has emerged as an option for Chelsea after his exploits with Gladbach and performances for France at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. After bagging 10 goals in 15 league appearances in the Bundesliga, the forward caught the eye during the World Cup, where he registered two assists in five appearances.

The France international has entered the final six months of his contract with Gladbach and is eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club. Chelsea are looking to sign Thuram in this transfer window but will face plenty of competition, with Man United one of several other suitors from across Europe.

Marcus Thuram to Chelsea—Good move?

Chelsea need a striker to help Graham Potter immediately after Armando Broja has been ruled out of the season with a serious knee injury. In addition to Broja’s long-term injury, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has failed to make the desired impact at Stamford Bridge following his summer move from Barcelona, while Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic have recently suffered injuries.

Graham Potter is under immense pressure following a run of poor results in the Premier League, with Chelsea dropping down to 10th in the table—ten points adrift of fourth-placed Man United. He is clearly in dire need of reinforcements, and after the addition of centre-back Benoit Badiashile from AS Monaco, the Blues tactician has shifted his focus towards recruiting a forward.

Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram is the latest player to be linked with a move to Chelsea. The 25-year-old has netted 10 times in the Bundesliga so far this campaign, which puts him second behind fellow countryman Christopher Nkunku of RB Leipzig in the German top-flight scoring charts. The forward performed admirably well at the 2022 World Cup, demonstrating he has the personality and the qualities to thrive at the highest level.

As Thuram has entered the final six months of his contract at Borussia-Park, he will be potentially available on a cut-price deal in this month. The Frenchman on a bargain fee could be a smart acquisition as he’d fit Potter’s system well, whilst playing out wide. Potter loves that flexibility within his players, though no doubt he is after a traditional number nine.

Thuram has the qualities to make an instant impact in the Premier League and help Chelsea’s attack massively. That said, the Blues must try sealing his signature sooner rather than later.
