Man City Players Rated And Slated After A Damaging 1-2 Loss Against Brentford

Ivan Toney scored a brace at the Etihad Stadium, as Brentford stunned Manchester City 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday.

Toney, 26, who was left out of Gareth Southgate’s 26-man England squad on Thursday ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, opened the scoring for Brentford in the 16th minute with a perfectly-cushioned header. Phil Foden levelled things up for the champions on the stroke of half time with a superb half-volley into the top corner.

However, the Bees had a sting in their tail and hit Man City on the break in the stoppage time, with Toney turning him Joshua Dasilva’s pass in the 98th minute.

Let us take a look at the Manchester City player ratings in their shock 2-1 defeat to Brentford at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City Player Ratings vs Brentford

Ederson—7/10

Ederson made some really good saves and held Ivan Toney’s ferocious volley in the second period to keep the scoreline 1-1, but was helpless to deny the Brentford star from winning the game deep into stoppage time. Made a big late save to deny Toney a hat-trick.

John Stones—4/10

John Stones was conservative on the ball and didn’t really give Manchester City too many options despite venturing into enemy territory a number of times. He had a tough time coping with wing-back Rico Henry’s pace and movement throughout the afternoon.

Manuel Akanji—4/10

Manuel Akanji was outjumped by Ben Mee in the lead-up to Brentford’s opening goal. Endured a tough time against Toney.

Aymeric Laporte—5/10

He wasn’t great positionally for Toney’s opening goal. Suffered a cut to the head but soldiered on with a strapping. The Spanish defender did brilliantly to stop Toney from tapping in a shot at the back post.

Joao Cancelo—4/10

Didn’t look as threatening with his playmaking abilities off the left as he often is. Lacked the incisiveness in his passing and was booked late for a blatant dive.

Rodri—5/10

Rodri was not at his usual best, failing to find his teammates much in the final third.

Kevin de Bruyne—6/10

A quiet day at the office it was for City’s creative hub, and barring one outstanding pass for Haaland in the first half, Kevin de Bruyne failed to exert his usual control over the game.

Ilkay Gundogan—5/10

Ilkay Gundogan failed to find his passing range against the Bees. Some rushed actions and wayward shooting summed up his afternoon.

Bernardo Silva—6/10

Almost won a penalty with one fine flick past Henry. His dazzling footwork and movement kept Brentford on their toes.

Phil Foden—7/10

Took his goal brilliantly on the stroke of half time. Lacked rhythm in the second period and almost finished the game at left-back.

Erling Haaland—4/10

Didn’t look fully fit. Erling Haaland was not close to his usual best and rarely got at the end of any crosses in the box. Other than setting Gundogan up for a golden chance, the Norwegian had a poor day.

Substitutes

Julian Alvarez—4/10

Came on late and had a chance to put Haaland through but delayed a decision too long and then passed the ball behind the City marksman.
