Liverpool are reportedly firmly in the mix for Las Palmas’ teenage talent Alberto Moleiro, as Jurgen Klopp looks to beef up his squad in January.
The Spaniard, 19, seemed destined to join Barcelona in the past summer transfer window, only for the deal to fall through. His performances for Las Palmas in the Segunda Division in the ongoing campaign, nonetheless, have caught the attention of many top European clubs and it is possible he may find himself elsewhere next term.
According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool are among a host of clubs looking at signing Las Palmas midfielder Alberto Moleiro. Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and Real Madrid are also interested in the player.
Moleiro has appeared 15 times for Las Palmas this season, registering three assists and helping Garcia Pimienta’s side to second place in the La Liga 2 table—three points behind league leaders Alaves.
After signing a new contract with his current team, the Spanish Under-21 international’s release clause in his contract, which runs until June 2026, is €30 million. Should Las Palmas achieve promotion to La Liga, then Moleiro‘s release clause will increase to €60 million, the report adds.
Alberto Moleiro to Liverpool—Should Jurgen Klopp pursue him?
Liverpool have shown signs of recovery in recent weeks after a poor start to the season, which has now seen them climb up to sixth in the table, seven points behind fourth-placed Spurs with a game in hand though. Jurgen Klopp perhaps remains interested in reinforcing his squad in January to aid his team’s top-four hopes.
A central midfielder must be prioritised, with Thiago Alcantara, James Milner and Jordan Henderson all in their 30s, while Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are injury prone. Fabinho’s performance levels have dipped this year, thus, accentuating the need for midfield reinforcements.
In that regard, the Reds’ interest in Las Palmas star Alberto Moleiro makes sense. Moleiro has been one of the standout performers in La Liga 2, keeping his side well and truly in the hunt for promotion.
The Spanish teenager’s creativity, energy and pressing, coupled with his long-range shooting, make him an exciting option for Liverpool to consider, and given Roberto Firmino’s contract is out in the summer – it might well be that a young creative midfielder to give rotation/backup option for the No.10 role might just be needed.
It seems obvious Alberto Moleiro is a huge talent, given the interest in the player from different corners of Europe. Young talents have thrived under the tutelage of Klopp over the years at Anfield, and managing to persuade Moleiro to join the Anfield outfit ahead of Europe’s bigwigs would be quite the achievement for Liverpool.
Thus, it would make sense for the Reds to splash €30 million in January for the Las Palmas teenager rather than risk paying €60 million come the summer.
