Chelsea are reportedly keeping tabs on Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes ahead of the January transfer window.
The Brazilian midfielder, 24, who was linked with a move to Arsenal before joining Newcastle United in January 2022, has proven to be an excellent acquisition in the Premier League. He has played a huge role in transforming the Geordies’ fortunes under Eddie Howe, as the north east outfit sit fourth in the table this term.
According to GOAL, Chelsea are keen on strengthening their midfield unit in the winter transfer window and could make an approach for Bruno Guimaraes. However, Newcastle United are willing to offer him a bumper new contract in a bid to convince him to stay at the St. James’ Park, with a host of top clubs vying for his signature.
Chelsea are on a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions under new manager Graham Potter. The Pensioners will be looking to achieve a top-four finish this season and, as a result, should free up funds for Potter to spend in the next transfer window.
Bruno Guimaraes to Chelsea—Should the Blues break the bank for him?
Chelsea are thought to be in the market for a new midfielder after N’Golo Kante’s constant struggles with injuries over the last couple of seasons. Kante has been ruled out for the long term after undergoing a hamstring operation, while Jorginho could leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the campaign after his contract expires.
Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes could be their man and another marquee signing after bringing in Raheem Sterling, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Marc Cucurella and Kalidou Koulibaly since the Todd Boehly-Clearlake consortium completed their takeover of Chelsea in May.
Bruno is having a fantastic campaign at the St. James’ Park as he has managed to establish himself as an important member of Eddie Howe’s side. The Brazilian international has made nine appearances for Newcastle so far this season, netting two goals and registering as many assists.
He has been solid at the base of the Magpies’ midfield based on his average of 2.9 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 0.1 blocks, 0.8 shots, 1.6 key passes and 1 dribble per 90 minutes in the Premier League. (stats courtesy: Whoscored) The 24-year-old has been tidy with his ball distribution after achieving an 85.2% pass success rate.
Bruno Guimaraes is a box-to-box midfielder by trade but has mostly operated as no.6 for Newcastle, dictating the tempo of play with his blend of passing range and defensive qualities. An accurate passer of the ball, the ex-Lyon man has got the decisive pass in his locker to carve open the opposition’s defence.
One can expect Bruno to add more quality to Chelsea‘s midfield department whilst increasing competition for places within the squad. But if Potter has to acquire the Brazilian’s services in January, the Blues must make an outrageous offer to tempt Newcastle into selling one of their prized assets.
