The English Premier League is widely considered to be one of the top football leagues in the world. It is watched by hundreds of millions of people every week around the globe and features the finest talent from Europe, South America and Asia.
World Cup odds suggest that Brazil is considered the favorite, and several of their team members play in the English Premier League. This includes Manchester City’s number one Ederson, Tottenham Hotspur’s big money signing Richarlison and Manchester United’s big money signing Casemiro.
The wealth of English talent going to the World Cup is immense. However, this sentence has repeatedly been said over the past few decades. The England team in 2006 contained some of the best midfielders of their generation, including Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes. However, they didn’t win a thing.
The new crop of players is showing incredible promise, including some of the best players in the English Premier League and further afield, such as the Bundesliga. Including players such as Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham. Jude Bellingham is still only 19 but has been linked with some of the biggest clubs in the EFL. When we break down the best players in the league, we primarily look at the best teams.
Last year’s winners Manchester City has a team that is packed full of internationals who will be appearing in this year’s World Cup. We have already discussed their Brazilian goalkeeper, Ederson. However, they also have England central defender John Stones and his defensive partner, Spain’s defensive unit Aymeric Laporte and Laporte’s fellow Spaniard, midfield lynchpin Rodri.
Last but certainly not least is Belgian wizard Kevin De Bruyne, who has been the key attacking player in City’s lineup over the past four years. He has been the team’s spine and has driven them to multiple titles and domestic cup honors. He will feature in this year’s World Cup with a Belgium team who finished third in the 2018 World Cup. Despite finishing so highly, the Belgians will be disappointed that their golden generation of incredible talent didn’t at least make it to one World Cup final.
Delving into the team, Julian Alvarez is touted as one of the next big names in Argentinian football. He has only recently broken into the City lineup after a successful loan spell at River Plate. Jack Grealish will also be looking to explode onto the international scene after his mega-money move to City from Aston Villa.
Moving on from Manchester City, the team that nearly beat them to the title on the final day, Liverpool, has a host of international players who are making an appearance in Qatar this November. Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk will be looking to get back to the form that led many analysts and players to believe he was the best defender on the planet in 2019 and 2020. He will be looking to inspire Holland to the achievements of some of their great teams of yesteryear. Despite Van Dijk taking quite an alarming dip in form at club level, when he performs to his potential, he is one of the best central defenders in today’s game and could captain the Netherlands to an interesting run in Qatar.
Chelsea has brought in what seems to be a brand-new squad this summer, splashing big money on some real stars. Raheem Sterling is probably the biggest of these names. Despite Chelsea’s weak start and relieving Thomas Tuchel of his services, Sterling will be looking to operate on all cylinders once the England team lands in Qatar. He is still one of England’s key players and one of the top goalscoring midfielders in the English Premier League.
Arsenal has been the surprise package in the EFL so far this season. They made some strong additions, but even the most ardent Gunner will be surprised to see them sitting at the top of the table after eight games. Having brought in Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City, the Brazilian striker is one of the reasons the South Americans are considered the clear favorites for this year’s tournament. Just down the road from the Emirates in North London, Tottenham Hotspur has several players who will feature in the World Cup.
This includes Gabriel Jesus’s attacking colleague Richarlison and South Korean megastar Son Heung-Min, who won the EPL Golden Boot last season. Another player from Spurs who will feature heavily in November includes their captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who lifted the last World Cup with France in 2018.
