Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored a hat-trick apiece, as Manchester City humbled cross-town rivals Manchester United 6-3 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Manchester City quickly found their gears and took the lead within ten minutes through Foden. Man United were second best thereafter, getting overrun time and again in midfield.
Pep Guardiola’s City were 3-0 up inside 37 minutes as Haaland began to make inroads. He then turned provider, helping the hosts cruise to a 4-0 lead at the break. Antony pulled one back for United with a rasping long drive from distance, but goals from Haaland and Foden in the 64th and 72nd minute respectively sent the Etihad Stadium delirious.
And even though substitute Anthony Martial scored twice inside the last six minutes to salvage some pride for United, it was a derby Erik ten Hag would want to erase from his memory as quickly as possible. On that note, here is how the Man United players fared in their dismal defeat to City in the Manchester derby.
Manchester United Player Ratings vs Manchester City
David de Gea- 3/10
Made an early save to deny Kevin de Bruyne but was hands down beaten in the six goals he conceded on a chastening afternoon.
Diogo Dalot- 2/10
The early booking for a foul on Jack Grealish meant Diogo Dalot walked a tightrope throughout the afternoon. This took away some of the aggression out of his game, as Grealish enjoyed a field day. Weak defensively and blunt going forward.
Raphael Varane- 3/10
Couldn’t cope with the array of City attacks and suffered an injury in the first half, ending his derby afternoon prematurely at the Etihad Stadium.
Lisandro Martinez- 3/10
Like Varane, Lisandro Martinez was unable to hold the swarm of City attacks in front of him. The diminutive Argentinean struggled to cope with Erling Haaland in the box. Could have been closer to Haaland for his hat-trick goal.
Tyrell Malacia- 2/10
Tyrell Malacia’s inexperience was exposed throughout the afternoon by the hosts. Could have done a lot better for Foden’s second goal.
Scott McTominay- 3/10
Barring a couple of good blocks in the opening periods of the game, Scott McTominay got completely overrun in midfield. Neither did he provide protection to the backline nor attacking impetus. A torrid afternoon!
Christian Eriksen- 3/10
Lost Foden for the first goal. Christian Eriksen barely managed to get a sniff of De Bruyne, who ran the show for City. Improved a bit after the break and got the assist for Antony’s strike, but the Dane was very underwhelming overall.
Antony- 4/10
Barely looked to be a part of the game until he struck home a beauty from long range. Other than his goal, he was wasteful in possession and offered very little help defensively to Dalot.
Bruno Fernandes- 3/10
Worked tirelessly throughout the afternoon but to no avail. Tried a few ambitious long balls and through balls that didn’t work out. The Portuguese got booked for dissent.
Jadon Sancho- 2/10
Arguably Sancho’s worst game in a Man United shirt as he failed to make any sort of impact whatsoever. The winger lost possession several times and failed to make the most of the little chances he got in the final third.
Marcus Rashford- 2/10
Failed to inspire his team after a brace in the last game against Arsenal. Showed signs of not being fully fit yet. Some of his back passes got his teammates into trouble in bad areas.
Substitutes
Victor Lindelof- 3/10
Replaced Varane before half-time. Wasn’t really at fault for any of the goals City scored.
Luke Shaw- 5/10
Replaced Malacia at half-time. Luke Shaw gave more of an attacking threat down the left, and barring a few bad touches, was composed in possession. Played a key role in Martial’s first goal by keeping the ball in play.
Casemiro- 4/10
Casemiro came on for McTominay and added some much-needed bite and energy to United’s midfield. Made some decent interceptions and tried his luck from distance.
Anthony Martial- 6/10
Anthony Martial showed no signs of rustiness after being a month out with injury. Linked play well and gave the visitors a presence up top. Pounced on an Ederson save to nod home his first goal before earning a penalty and scoring excellently from the spot. The only positive for United on a grim day!
Fred- 5/10
Looked lively after coming on. Recovered possession a few times and got into dangerous positions in the box. Got an assist for Martial’s goal.
