Robert Lewandowski has explained that ‘something has died’ in him, in his decision to leave Bayern this summer. He has been linked with a move to Barcelona.
The Polish striker has shattered numerous records during his time at Bayern, since moving to Munich in 2015. The 33-year-old has netted 344 goals for the Bundesliga champions. He is second and only behind Gerd Muller in the all-time leading goal-scorer list for Bayern. During his time at Munich, he has managed to overtake the likes of Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben.
Lewandowski has been linked with a move to Spain this summer. Barcelona are the favorites to sign him and the striker has admitted that he has not considered any other offer other than that of Barca.
Speaking about his desire to leave, Lewandowski opined:
“I only want to leave Bayern. Loyalty and respect are more important than work. The best way is to find a solution together”
“Something has died in me, I want to leave Bayern for more emotions in my life”.
“What kind of player would want to come to Bayern Munich, if he knows that he will not be allowed to leave the club?”
It has also been reported that Lewandowski is starting to consider not showing up for Bayern’s pre-season. The only thing missing is an agreement between the two clubs. The personal terms have already been agreed upon.
It is a well-established fact that Los Cules must first sell before they can buy. Their dire financial situation has not allowed registering the likes of Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie. Moreover, they have not been able to register Sergi Roberto as well.
It is believed that the club is looking to complete at least 11 departures this summer. The idea is to free up the wage bill.
Barcelona are already working on Frenkie de Jong’s departure though it all depends on the player’s will.
Assuming that they do solve their financial issues (to an extent, if not completely) they must start pushing for Lewandowski. It is vital that the 33-year-old is a part of the pre-season.
Last season it was evident that Xavi’s side lacked a clear-cut finisher. The 33-year-old is lethal in the box and he is a welcome addition to a side that creates many chances on an average. Moreover, a frontline of Ansu Fati, Robert Lewandowski, and Ferran Torres will be a perfectly balanced one, with two wide wingers and a box striker.
Lewandowski has also trained under Pep Guardiola and will ease into Xavi’s system of playing in closed spaces.
The question remains, however; will Barca succeed in their attempt to sign Lewandowski this summer?
