Manchester United are reportedly plotting a shock swoop for Bayern Munich hitman Robert Lewandowski in the summer.
Lewandowski’s contract expires in 2023 and he is yet to pen a new deal with the German champions. The Pole has repeatedly stated that he’s open to a new challenge away from the Bundesliga and Manchester United are in a perfect position to capitalize.
According to Bild, Lewandowski and Bayern have not made any headway in contract negotiations, opening the door for the Red Devils to line up a move for the 33-year-old.
Lewandowski has transformed into the finest centre-forward in the world over the past few years. His record in front of goal is unmatched, having netted 336 times in 364 appearances for Bayern in all competitions.
The Pole has led the club to seven straight Bundesliga titles and was instrumental in their Champions League triumph in 2019-20.
Robert Lewandowski: The perfect fit for Manchester United?
Manchester United will be on the lookout for a new striker in the summer. Edinson Cavani is expected to leave the club when his contract expires, while Cristiano Ronaldo has failed to have the kind of impact expected of him when he arrived from Juventus in the summer.
Marcus Rashford is not an out-and-out striker and Mason Greenwood’s career at United appears to be over following allegations of assault.
Thus, a move for Robert Lewandowski, given the present situation, is a no-brainer. The Pole is a lethal finisher with both feet and fantastic in the air. The former Borussia Dortmund man is also great at linking up play and his movement, awareness and control make him a nightmare to defend against. His work rate is also exceptional and he has the ability to lead a press, a trait Manchester United lack at the moment.
Despite being 33, Lewandowski is extremely fit and has at least a few more seasons of top-level football in him. He will add a winning mentality and tons of experience to Manchester United, potentially making them title contenders once again.
A move to the Red Devils from Bayern could be viewed as a step down for the Pole though. He has grown accustomed to challenging for the Champions League and he might not be in a position to do that at United, who are in danger of missing out on Europe’s elite club competition next season.
But if Ralf Rangnick’s side can squeeze into the top four, their chances of signing the Pole will receive a massive boost.
