Manchester United are reportedly one of several Premier League clubs keeping tabs on Ajax’s highly-rated winger, Antony.
The Red Devils are expected to spend big in the summer transfer window after experiencing a quiet January window. They will also appoint a permanent manager at the end of the season, with Ajax boss Erik ten Haag one of the leading candidates for the vacant position.
According to 90min, Manchester United are interested in signing Ajax winger Antony, who could potentially be joined by Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford should a move materialise. The report adds that clubs from Spain and Italy are also interested in the Brazilian, but the player through his representatives has let know that he desires to play in the Premier League.
Antony, 21, is fast developing into one of world football’s brightest young talents following his move to Ajax from Sao Paulo in 2020. The Olympic Gold medalist has been a constant menace for Eredivisie defenders this season, netting seven times in 18 outings so far this term.
He has also shone in the Champions League with two goals and four assists, as Ten Hag’s Ajax side enjoyed a flawless passage into the knockout rounds from Group C.
Antony to Man United—Smashing move for the Red Devils?
Antony is the latest player to be linked with a move to Manchester United, though, as the Red Devils look to make top-quality attacking additions to their squad.
While Cristiano Ronaldo is 37 and slowly edging towards the end of a glittering career, Edinson Cavani’s contract at Old Trafford runs out at the end of the season. The veteran Uruguayan striker is likely to move on from the Mancunian club amidst interest from plenty of clubs in Europe and South America.
Mason Greenwood is indefinitely suspended, and Marcus Rashford has struggled to impact games when playing off the right. This means the Red Devils could do well with a new wide player, which makes Antony a viable target.
A left-footed winger, Antony likes to operate on the right flank and cut in to great effect. He is a silky smooth dribbler who can create goalscoring opportunities out of nothing, link play and get at the end of things to finish off moves.
The diminutive Brazilian would add creativity, width, pace and unpredictability to the Man United attack that hasn’t clicked and produced goods consistently this season, despite possessing some unbelievable players up front. The 21-year-old also brings a trophy-winning mentality that is desperately lacking at Old Trafford, having won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup last year.
At 21, Antony could prove a long-term asset for Man United, especially taking into account just how crucial he has been for Ajax since arriving in 2020. The Brazilian is too impressive a talent to miss out on and the Red Devils must go all out for his signature when the transfer window reopens in the summer.
