Newcastle United Train Their Eyes On Tottenham Outcast: Shrewd Option For Howe?

Newcastle United are reportedly keeping close tabs on the situation of Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn ahead of a possible swoop.

The Magpies have already completed the signing of full-back Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid, as Eddie Howe looks to keep his team afloat in the top flight. After bolstering his team’s defensive options, Howe is keen on adding firepower to his rather toothless attack.

According to 90min, Newcastle United are interested in signing Tottenham’s Steven Bergwijn but they will have to fend off competition from Ajax. The Dutchman is considering his options this month after growing frustrated with the lack of opportunities under new Spurs head coach Antonio Conte, the report adds.

Having signed for Tottenham from PSV Eindhoven in a £27m deal in January 2020, Bergwijn, 24, has failed to cement his place in the first team. He is yet to start a Premier League fixture under Antonio Conte and after seeing his game time diminish in the last two months, the speedy attacker is ready to move on from the north London club.

Newcastle United were dealt a severe blow last week when Eddie Howe confirmed that striker Callum Wilson will be out of action for up to two months with an ankle injury. Injury to Wilson has left Howe’s options depleted in attack, thereby, accentuating the need for more firepower to try and beat the drop this term.

Fortunately for the Magpies, Steven Bergwijn is considering leaving Spurs after two frustrating years in north London. A move to Newcastle could do well for him, even though they are battling against relegation.

Predominantly a left-winger, Bergwijn is more than capable of operating down the right or through the middle and influencing his team’s play in the final third. The Netherlands international is a stocky player who has got a very good all-round game, with his blistering pace and unpredictable movement making him an asset on the counter-attack.

The ex-PSV Eindhoven star can not only link the play but also make runs in behind the defenders, create opportunities for his teammates and score goals. Bergwijn may not have produced the goods consistently at Spurs but there’s no doubting his talent and ability to impact a game—a profile Newcastle are in desperate need of in the final third at the moment.

The Dutch forward’s burst of acceleration, coupled with his energy, vision and versatility, could help the Toon Army in their bid to stave off relegation during the second half of the campaign. It remains to be seen if this transfer materialises and Bergwijn gets out of his Spurs nightmare.
