West Ham United Eyeing A Move For In-demand Eredivisie Star: Right Option For Moyes

West Ham United are reportedly among a host of European clubs vying for the signature of highly-rated Feyenoord defender Marcos Senesi.

The Hammers are widely expected to dip into the January transfer market to try and deal with their growing defensive injury crisis. They have lost Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna—two regular starters at the back this season—to long-term injuries, leaving David Moyes with Issa Diop and Craig Dawson as the only two fit options in the squad.

According to 90min, West Ham have been watching Feyenoord’s defensive rock Marcos Senesi closely ahead of the winter window. The Argentinean’s performances have also been tracked by the likes of Manchester United, Aston Villa, Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United in recent months, the report states.

Having arrived from San Lorenzo in 2019, Senesi, 24, has slowly but steadily grown into one of the Eredivisie’s best defenders over the past couple of seasons. He has made 26 appearances in all formats already this season, bagging a goal and three assists in the process.

With his rock-solid performances at the back for the Rotterdam-based club, West Ham are expected to face a lot of competition for the former Argentinean under-23 international’s signature in the New Year.

Marcos Senesi to West Ham—A strong defensive option for Moyes?

West Ham’s form has faltered in recent weeks, with David Moyes’ side managing just one win in their last six league games. Their latest 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium has seen Moyes’ side fall out of the top four.

If the Hammers are to realistically fight for a top-four finish as well as enjoy a fruitful run in the Europa League, they must make a couple of additions to their squad. Having lost two defensive pillars in Zouma and Ogbonna to injuries, the signing of a centre-back stands as a priority, and to that end, Marco Senesi would be a smart fit at the London Stadium.

Senesi, regarded as one the Eredivisie’s best defenders, is a strong and imposing centre-back with excellent technical ability on the ball. The 24-year-old is a calm and composed player, known for his reading of the game, aerial ability and ball-winning skills. Despite his relatively young age, the Argentinean has shown tremendous maturity when leading the defence for Feyenoord, and West Ham need someone of his ilk going forward.

The east Londoners have lacked solidity at the back in the last two weeks, and if Moyes manages to get hold of someone like Senesi to work with, the Scottish tactician could finally shape his defence properly and make the team defensively robust again. Being left-footed, the ex-San Lorenzo man would also represent a long-term replacement for Ogbonna, who is 33 and out for the foreseeable future with an ACL injury.

At 24, Marcos Senesi certainly has the best years ahead of him and West Ham must pull all the stops out to get his signature in the New Year.
