Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier in the January transfer window.
The Magpies finally picked up their first win of the season against Burnley on matchday 15. However, they could definitely do well with a couple of additions, as Eddie Howe aims to maintain the club’s Premier League status.
According to The Telegraph, Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier could become manager Eddie Howe’s first signing at Newcastle United. The England international was wanted by Manchester United in the summer but the Magpies want to make the right-back one of their first January transfers after their Saudi takeover.
Trippier, 31, has been a huge success at Atletico Madrid since his move from Tottenham Hotspur in 2019, improving the defensive side of his game under the astute management of Diego Simeone.
The defender, who was a key member of the England squad that reached the Euro 2020 final in the summer, helped the Los Rojiblancos win the La Liga title last season.
Kieran Trippier to Newcastle United – A solid option for Eddie Howe?
Newcastle United are embroiled in a relegation battle but the Saudi-led takeover means they have funds to back manager Eddie Howe in the upcoming window.
With the Magpies currently having the worst defensive record in the division, bringing in defensive reinforcements has to be one of Eddie Howe’s topmost priorities. A centre-back is a must, as none of the current options has been consistent since the start of the season. In addition, signing a quality right-back would go a long way towards improving the side’s defensive structure.
In that regard, Kieran Trippier is a viable target for Newcastle. A right-back by trade, Trippier can also operate as a left-back or at right wing-back, which would make him a handy asset for the Magpies. The Englishman is an accomplished player with the ball at his feet, and his crossing ability is one of the biggest strengths of his game.
The 31-year-old is adept at moving up the pitch on the flanks, and having also become defensively sounder under Atletico boss Diego Simone in the last couple of years, he would be considered as an instant upgrade on both Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth.
Add his ability on the ball and versatility to his leadership skills and vast Premier League experience, Trippier represents a very attractive option for Newcastle. At 31, he won’t be a long-term option but Howe’s side could benefit a lot both defensively and offensively while improving the depth of the squad.
Thus, Newcastle must go all out to bring Trippier back to the Premier League in January.
