Tottenham Targeting A Move For £20m Rated Imposing Nigerian Forward: Good Option For nuno?

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly joined the transfer race for KRC Genk target-man Paul Onuachu.

The north London club continues to scour the market for back-up options for Harry Kane, although whether the English striker will stay at the club is uncertain. Kane, 28, had expressed his desire to leave the club this summer but was denied a move to Manchester City, thereby, leaving him with no choice but to stay put at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham are interested in signing £20m-rated Genk striker Paul Onuachu but must fend off interest from the likes of West Ham, Southampton, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

Onuachu, 27, has been a consistent goal-scorer for Genk since arriving from Danish club FC Midtjylland in the summer of 2019. The Nigerian international had an incredible last season where he found the back of the net 35 times in 41 appearances across all competitions, playing a vital role in helping the club win the Belgian Cup.

The 27-year-old striker has started the new season with flying colours with 11 goals in 17 games for the Belgian club, which has unsurprisingly made him a target for many top clubs.

Paul Onuachu to Tottenham—How will he fit in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side?

Nuno Espirito Santo has a decent squad at his disposal that can easily challenge for a top-six spot, whilst winning the inaugural UEFA Conference League.

Spurs, spearheaded by talisman Harry Kane, could climb further up the table if they go on a consistent run from now onwards until at least the New Year. In Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura, Steven Bergwijn, Dele Alli and Bryan Gil, Nuno does have quality attacking options at his disposal.

The one area the north London club seems to be lacking is the depth up front, with Kane being the only out-and-out number nine in the squad. Considering Kane’s ankle injury problems in recent years and the fact that his long-term future at the club is yet to be resolved, it makes complete sense from Spurs’ perspective to bring in a striker in the January transfer window.

To that end, Paul Onuachu seems to be a smart fit at Tottenham. Standing at 6ft 7ins tall, Onuachu is blessed with immense physicality, power and aerial ability. Due to his heading prowess, he is deadly in the box and is an asset to have at both ends of the pitch during set-pieces. He has scored plenty of goals since arriving at Genk, and at 27, is currently playing at the peak of his powers.

The big Nigerian has the required qualities to thrive in the hustle and bustle of Premier League football and could be a very good addition for Spurs, especially if he can keep up his current form. Onuachu would provide Nuno’s side with a different dimension in attack, whilst being an able back-up to Kane. Should Kane decide to leave, he could be handed the opportunity to make the number nine position his own at Spurs.

At a reported £20m, Onuachu would represent something of a steal for Tottenham.
