Tottenham Transfer Window Rating: Fine Job By Levy Puts Nuno In The Driver’s Seat

Tottenham Hotspur was in the news the entire transfer window this summer as the Harry Kane transfer saga ran on for weeks. Spurs, though, managed to keep hold of their talisman despite the English striker declaring his wish to leave this summer.

Daniel Levy stonewalled City’s attempts to engineer a deal leaving Pep Guardiola frustrated and Man City learning first hand Levy’s negotiation tactics.

Spurs, under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, have made a good start to the season, winning all three games – the only club in the Premier League to do so this campaign.

The North London club have also brought in a number of fresh faces to the club for the 2021-22 season.

Let’s take a look at Tottenham’s summer transfer window

Ins

Cristian Romero – Loan with option to buy for £46.7m

Tottenham lost one of their defensive stalwarts Toby Alderweireld this summer, who was quickly replaced by Atalanta’s Cristian Romero. The Argentinian centre-back was the standout defender in Serie A last season, which earned him a move to Spurs.

The North London club has signed him initially on loan and can make the move permanent at the end of the season. Romero is a commanding, quick, and  aggressive defender who can win the ball in the air and on the ground, and initiate attacks with his passing.

Bryan Gil – £21.6 million + Erik Lamela

Spurs have signed an exciting young winger, Bryan Gil, this summer, who has a bright future ahead of him. The left-sided winger was signed from Sevilla for a fee of £21.6 million, while Erik Lamela was also part of the deal.

Gil could be used as a backup to Son Heung-min on the left and could be a deadly player for them, especially on the counter.

Emerson Royal – Undisclosed

Tottenham had been linked with a number of right-backs this summer as manager Nuno Espirito Santo didn’t seem to trust either Serge Aurier or Matt Doherty. The signing of Emerson from Barcelona will probably remedy that situation.

The Brazilian is a strong and powerful full-back who can offer something in attack and defence. The 22-year-old would be a good fit in Spurs’ backline and this is a shrewd signing by the club as Emerson has been good in La Liga and also has international experience with Brazil.

Pape Matar Sarr – Undisclosed

18-year-old midfielder Pape Matar Sarr was signed by Spurs from Metz and has been sent back on loan to the French club. The Senegal international is a bright prospect who could be a useful player for Spurs in the future.

Pierluigi Gollini – Loan

Spurs signed goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta on loan to serve as backup to Hugo Lloris.

Outs

Toby Alderweireld – Undisclosed

Alderweireld has moved to Qatar club Al-Duhail, ending his six-year association with Spurs.

Juan Foyth – Undisclosed

After spending last year on loan at Villarreal, Juan Foyth’s miserable Spurs career has come to an end.

Moussa Sissoko – £3 million

Moussa Sissoko was sold by Tottenham to fellow Premier League side Watford, as he did not seem to be in the plans of the new Spurs manager.

Joe Hart – Undisclosed

After playing second fiddle to Lloris for one season, England international Joe Hart has moved to Scottish giants Celtic.

Serge Aurier – Contract Terminated

Tottenham tried hard to move Serge Aurier this summer, but there were no takers for him. Aurier’s contract with the club was terminated by mutual consent.

Rating – 9/10

Although Tottenham have made some smart additions to the side this summer, their biggest move was to keep Harry Kane at the club for at least another season.

With the start that Santo has had as Spurs manager, the North London side could surprise a few as they have a talented squad but a lingering doubt remains as to whether the squad depth is good enough to see them fight till the end of the season or not.
