Leicester City are reportedly among a few Premier League clubs keen on signing Real Madrid star Marco Asensio.
Real Madrid are looking to sell Marco Asensio this summer as he is not in new manager Carlo Ancelotti’s plans. The Italian boss hasn’t been impressed with the Spanish international’s performances and is looking to work with young guns like Rodrygo Goes and Takefusa Kubo in the upcoming campaign.
According to Spanish news outlet Fichajes, Leicester City have made an offer to Real Madrid for Marco Asensio, who is currently part of the Spanish team participating in the Olympic Games.
Marco Asensio, 25, was regarded as the next big thing at Los Blancos after signing from RCD Mallorca back in 2015. However, things have gone downhill since the winger suffered an ACL injury during a pre-season game against Arsenal in 2019.
The 25-year-old Spaniard hasn’t hit top form since returning from a serious knee injury in June last year. The 2020/21 season saw Asensio, whose contract at the club ends in the summer of 2023, manage just five goals and two assists in 35 LaLiga appearances, as Real Madrid went trophyless.
Marco Asensio: What will he add to the Leicester City team?
Leicester City have missed out on Champions League football for two consecutive seasons under Brendan Rodgers. While Rodgers won the FA Cup last season, the Foxes’ aim in the 2021/22 season will be to break into the top four and bring Champions League football back to the King Power Stadium.
And to help Leicester City achieve those targets, Brendan Rogers and co. are building a solid team. They have signed Boubakary Soumare and Patson Daka from Lille OSC and Red Bull Salzburg respectively, whilst acquiring the services of Ryan Bertrand on a free transfer from Southampton.
The Northern Irish tactician must now shift his focus towards reinforcing his team’s wide options. Marco Asensio, in that regard, could be a good fit at the King Power Stadium. Asensio’s form at Real Madrid has dipped over the last two seasons, particularly due to a serious knee injury, but there’s no doubting his talent and ability to get back his mojo sooner rather than later.
The Spanish international, who can operate on either flank or through the middle as a no.10, has the ability to drive at defences with the ball, link with attackers and create opportunities. The 25-year-old is a clever operator with the vision to unlock rigid defences and an eye for goal.
The ex-Mallorca man would add quality and depth to Leicester’s wide department, whilst being an instant upgrade on Marc Albrighton, who will turn 32 in November and can’t play every game. As well as having all the right attributes to fit into this exciting Foxes side, Marco Asensio has a winner’s mentality too, having won numerous league and Champions League trophies with Real Madrid.
If Asensio can quickly adapt to the rigours of Premier League football, he could turn out to be a fantastic addition to Rodgers’ attacking ranks at the King Power Stadium.
