Leicester City Edge Closer To A Deal For Bundesliga Winger: Shrewd Piece Of Business By Rodgers

Leicester City are reportedly in talks with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig over the signing of winger Ademola Lookman.

The Foxes have enjoyed a solid transfer window so far, bringing in the likes of Patson Daka, Boubakary Soumare, Jannik Vestergaard and Ryan Bertrand. However, Brendan Rodgers isn’t fully convinced with the club’s depth in wide areas and has expressed his desire of signing an attacker to bolster his forward department.

According to The Athletic, Leicester City want to sign RB Leipzig’s Ademola Lookman on a season-long loan with an option to buy but still have work to do before reaching an agreement with the Bundesliga club.

Ademola Lookman, 23, spent the last season on loan at Fulham from RB Leipzig. He was one of the rare bright spots in an otherwise torrid Premier League campaign that ended in relegation for Fulham. The English winger made 34 appearances for the Cottagers, scoring four goals and registering as many assists.

Ademola Lookman to Leicester City—What will he add to Brendan Rodgers’ squad?

Brendan Rodgers has just three natural wide players in his squad—Harvey Barnes, Marc Albrighton and Ricardo Pereira who doubles up as the right-back. James Maddison and Ayoze Perez can also play out wide but they are more effective centrally due to their ability to unlock a rigid defence with passing skills, link-up play and movement.

With Albrighton set to turn 32 in November and Ricardo converted into a right-back by Rodgers, the Foxes would do a wise job by reinforcing their wide department. Ademola Lookman, in that regard, would fit the bill perfectly at the King Power Stadium.

Lookman has predominantly played on the left in his career so far, but he’s one of those forwards who can play across the front-line. He’s played on the right, operated behind the main striker from a central position and as a secondary striker.

The 23-year-old is a talented player blessed with gifted feet, dribbling skills, pace and movement. Off the left, he likes to cut in on his favoured right foot and put in threatening balls into the box or take shots on goal. Lookman’s burst of pace and ability to skip past players were always his strengths but the fact that he has worked upon and improved a lot on the finishing front, as demonstrated by his time with Fulham last season, means he is wanted once again in the Premier League.

At Leicester, the former England under-21 international would potentially compete with the likes of Barnes and Albrighton, whilst adding much-needed depth to the wide areas of the pitch. Ademola Lookman needs regular game time to reach his true potential and a club like Leicester whose ambitions will be to break into the top four this time around would be perfect for him.

Thus, the Foxes signing Lookman from RB Leipzig would represent a shrewd piece of business on the transfer deadline day.
