Chelsea are interested in signing former Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero. The veteran Argentine goalkeeper is currently out-of-contract, as his deal with the Red Devils expired this summer, ending his six-year stay at the club.
As per The Telegraph, the Blues are keen to add a third goalkeeper to their squad following the release of Willy Caballero. Romero is earmarked as one option by the London club, to be the third-choice goalkeeper behind Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga, as things stand.
The 34-year-old played second fiddle to David de Gea throughout his Manchester United career, but he didn’t feature in a single game last season. Dean Henderson took his spot in the Manchester United squad last season, which forced him out of contention for any game time. Romero is an Argentine international who has played 96 times for his national team.
Sergio Romero: Shrewd move by the club?
In the 2020-21 season, new signing Edouard Mendy became the first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Kepa. Mendy had a solid debut season, while Kepa also seemed solid when called upon last season.
It seems like the two will remain at Chelsea for the upcoming season and fight it out for the spot in the Chelsea starting XI. But, most teams, especially those that want to be successful in Europe, need a solid third goalkeeper who can step in if the first two are injured or suspended.
Sergio Romero could be a fantastic third-choice goalkeeper addition for the Blues. The Argentine has vast experience in club football as well as international football, having played all across Europe. Romero is a dependable figure between the sticks, who is adept at saving close range shots and is a good penalty saver as well.
The 34-year-old is communicative at the back and marshals his defence when needed. He is also good with the ball at his feet and has the ability to pass out from the back. This is an important trait in modern-day football, as well as at a top club like Chelsea.
Romero could certainly push Mendy and Kepa and keep them on their toes and add competition to the squad. He has experience of playing in the Premier League and European football as well, which will help him settle down quickly at Chelsea. The Blues will have to give him some time to gain match fitness as he hasn’t played a single game since August 2020, when he featured in the Europa League quarter-final against FC Copenhagen.
