Tottenham Hotspur identify Jose Mourinho’s successor: The right manager for them?

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on bringing in Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo as a replacement for Jose Mourinho.

Nuno has had a successful spell as Wolves manager, taking them up to the Premier League and also registering two strong finishes in the league.

As per Daily Express, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is a “fan” of the Wolves boss, and he could replace his former manager Mourinho at the club.

The report states that Wolves could ask for a compensation of around £8 million if Tottenham Hotspur approach their manager. The Wolves boss has two years remaining on his contract at the club.

The likes of Maurizio Sarri and Brendan Rodgers have also been linked with a move to Spurs. Nuno, meanwhile, has attracted interest from Spurs’ North London rivals Arsenal, as per the report.

Tottenham Hotspur had a strong start to the 2020-21 Premier League season, and many fans and pundits tipped Mourinho’s side to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the table. But, the North London club’s fortunes have dipped over the last few months and they are no longer favourites to even finish in the top four.

Mourinho’s side was also dumped out of the Europa League by Dinamo Zagreb. The Portuguese manager seems to no longer have the magic touch and has been left behind by younger managers in the game.

It’s only a matter of when, not if, the Portuguese manager gets the sack at Tottenham. The current Spurs team has a few star players, one of which is Harry Kane, and the Englishman may not stay for a long time at the club if he feels that he has no chance of winning a trophy.

A manager like Nuno Espirito Santo could change the fortunes of the club and help Spurs progress upwards as Mauricio Pochettino did. Santo isn’t as proactive as Pochettino with his tactics, but he isn’t as pragmatic as Jose Mourinho either.

The Portuguese manager has shown that he can perform wonders, like taking the club to the Europa League quarter-finals, just one year after being promoted to the Premier League.

He is a young manager who puts great emphasis on the defensive side of things, but also gives attackers the freedom to shine. Bringing in Nuno could help revitalise the Spurs squad, who seem to be down in the dumps under Mourinho.

The 47-year-old has achieved quite a bit with a club with lesser resources like Wolves, so he could do better with Tottenham Hotspur, who are stronger financially.
