Defending Premier League champions Liverpool have had a nightmare title defence this season and now face an almighty fight to even finish in the top four. But, their star man Mohamed Salah is once again in the running to win the Premier League Golden Boot. The Egyptian is the leading goalscorer in the Premier League this season with 17 goals – two shy of his tally from last season.
Salah has won the Golden Boot twice in his Liverpool career, the first coming in his debut 2017-18 season, where he scored 32 goals; and the second coming in the 2018-19 season where he scored 22 goals.
The Liverpool attacker, though, has stiff competition this season, with a host of star players vying for the Golden Boot.
Let’s take a look at 3 players who can beat Mohamed Salah to the Golden Boot this season:
Bruno Fernandes
Manchester United attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes has had an incredible impact on the Red Devils’ side since joining the club in January 2020. The Portuguese attacker has scored 35 goals since his arrival to England, 24 of which have been in the Premier League.
Fernandes is currently on 16 goals in the Premier League, one shy of Salah’s tally. The Red Devils player could very well overtake Salah considering Liverpool’s poor form, Manchester United receiving plenty of penalties, which Fernandes usually converts, and the Manchester club’s decent form.
Harry Kane
Harry Kane, like Fernandes, is on 16 goals in the Premier League this season. The Englishman has won the Golden Boot twice in his career, which came in back-to-back seasons between 2015 and 2017. He scored 25 and 29 goals, respectively, then.
Kane’s Spurs side have had an up and down season, and they seem to be peaking at the right time, as they have put in good performances since the start of February. The North London club have scored 14 goals in their last five games in all competitions, and if they continue this promising goalscoring run, Kane is assured of getting a fair few goals himself.
Kane has truly come on strong as of late, having scored three goals in his last six games and five in his last eight, to the point where he’s now seen as an odds-on favorite to win the Golden Boot, despite presently having scored fewer goals than Mo Salah. Even when he hasn’t added to his tally, like in the game against Arsenal, Kane is never far away from doing so as he hit the post and had another gilt-edged opportunity late on.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a fantastic start to the 2020-21 Premier League as he racked up plenty of goals. The Englishman has 14 goals in the season, but a majority of them came in 2020. The Everton striker has scored just thrice in the Premier League in 2021 but seems to be slowly getting back in form again.
If Calvert-Lewin can recapture his early-season form, which saw him score 7 goals in the opening 5 games, he could very well compete for the Golden Boot title in the remainder of the season which is approaching its business end.
