Barcelona could reportedly make a move for Chelsea central defender Antonio Rudiger in the January transfer window. The German international has been overlooked by Frank Lampard, and has played just twice this season, with both appearances coming in the Champions League.
As per Spanish daily Sport, Rudiger is a low-cost option for the Catalans to give competition to their current crop of defenders. The German is said to be interested in making the deal happen, while Chelsea are also interested in negotiating with Barcelona.
Rudiger has two years remaining on his current contract at Chelsea. The 27-year-old has made 117 appearances for the Blues since signing for them in 2017 from AS Roma, but has not been as consistent as he would have liked to be.
Antonio Rudiger to Barcelona – A good move by the club?
Manchester City’s young centre-back Eric Garcia seems to be Barcelona’s primary target to strengthen their defence (h/t Sport). Garcia was part of the Barca academy before he joined City. His contract expires at the end of the season, so he can re-join the club on a free transfer.
But, Barcelona may need another defender in the January transfer window. Injuries and dip in form have stopped their defenders from progressing this season. If they cannot agree a fee with Manchester City over Garcia in the January transfer window, they may have to look elsewhere. Antonio Rudiger could be a decent signing for Barcelona as he is a player that suits their style of play.
The German international is a player who likes to bring the ball out of defence, while also building attacks with his strong short passing. Rudiger is a ball-playing defender that could slot alongside Gerard Pique or Clement Lenglet at the back for Barcelona.
He has vast experience and is also a German international, having 37 appearances for his country. Rudiger could be a cheap option as Chelsea don’t seem to have him in their future plans, and with his contract running out in a year-and-a-half, Barcelona could secure his signing for a reduced fee.
They could then sign Garcia in the summer, which would give manager Ronald Koeman a few decent options at the back. This is a deal that Barcelona should make in the January transfer window.
