West Brom Eye A Loan Swoop For Championship Forward: A Good Move By The Club?

West Bromwich Albion are reportedly interested in signing Huddersfield Town forward Karlan Grant before the domestic deadline day. Grant signed with The Terriers last year in the January transfer window from Charlton Athletic.

As per Football Insider, West Brom and Huddersfield have had talks over the signing of Grant and there’s a possibility that the deal could go through before Friday’s deadline. The report states that Grant could move on loan to The Baggies, with a future fee of around £14 million.

The 23-year-old has been in good form since signing for Huddersfield last year, scoring 23 goals in 57 appearances in all competitions, four of which came in the 2018-19 Premier League season. Grant has two years remaining on his current deal with the club.

West Bromwich Albion are in desperate need of a striker who can score consistently. The Baggies’ current options up front are the experienced duo of Hal Robson-Kanu and Charlie Austin, but neither of them have impressed so far. Kenneth Zohore is the third option, who has been injured since the start of the season.

Callum Robinson, who has predominantly played as a winger in his career, has been moved to a more central role, and while he has done reasonably well, he is not a natural centre-forward. It’s imperative that West Brom sign another striker as no one in the current squad is good enough to help keep them in the top-flight.

Karl Grant would be an interesting signing for The Baggies. The striker had a solid 2019-20 season in the Championship, scoring 19 goals, while he also did well in the latter part of the 2018-19 Premier League season.

Grant is a player who comes alive in the box and is a predatory finisher. The striker, who has also played as a winger or a second striker, likes to drop deep and run at defences, while also run behind the defence.

He is a versatile forward who can run at defences and also ghost into empty spaces in the penalty box, and most importantly, score goals. At 23, Grant can improve further and he could be a breath of fresh air in this West Brom side.

The likes of James Maddison and Ollie Watkins are examples of players who have done well in the Premier League after making the jump from the Championship, and if West Brom sign Grant, they will hope he replicates his form in the top-flight.
