Tottenham looking to sign midfield ace for around £13m: What will he add to the team?

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly looking to sign Watford midfielder Will Hughes, who could be one of many players to leave Vicarage Road.

The 25-year-old Englishman joined the Hornets in 2017 from Derby County, and became a key part of the Watford side.

As per Mirror Football, Hughes is a target for Spurs manager Jose Mourinho, and the midfielder could be signed for around £13 million, as per the report.

The report further states that incoming transfers will depend on players sales, which includes the likes of Danny Rose, Juan Foyth, Paulo Gazzaniga and Serge Aurier.

Hughes joined Watford from Derby for a fee of £8 million. The midfielder still has two years remaining on his current deal at the club.

Will Hughes to Tottenham Hotspur – What will he add to the team?

Jose Mourinho is building a team of full of hard-working, strong players, who can take the game to the opposition with their aggression and tenacity. It’s been evident in the signings he has made in this transfer window.

Under Mourinho, Tottenham have signed experienced players, who have already flourished in the Premier League. Wolves’ Matt Doherty, former Manchester City player Joe Hart, and Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are all proven players in the top-flight, and are expected to hit the ground running.

Will Hughes also fits into the Mourinho mould, a player who is determined, works hard, is solid defensively, and can play in numerous positions.

The 25-year-old is primarily a central midfielder or defensive midfielder, but he has been played out wide on the right and left, as well as a No. 10. Hughes is good on the ball, can dribble forward, as well as play quick short passes to link the midfield and attack.

The left-footed midfielder is strong defensively, can win the ball with his tackling, and make key interceptions with his positioning. In the 2019-20 Premier League season, he averaged 2.5 tackles per game. (Stats via Whoscored)

Hughes could be a useful squad player who can play in multiple positions. Spurs have numerous options in midfield, with the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, and Eric Dier, as well as last summer’s big signing, Tanguy Ndombele all waiting to be selected. But, the Frenchman could be on his way out of the club after falling out with Mourinho.

Hughes has Premier League experience, isn’t afraid to tackle, and will add loads of energy to the Spurs midfield, and would hence be a shrewd addition to the team.
