Tottenham Hotspur are the latest side to have been linked with a move for Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilon, as per reports.
The Spanish left-back had a terrific season with Sevilla last time around, and his year-long loan ended with him getting his hands on the Europa League trophy.
As per Daily Mail, Spurs have now joined Manchester United in the race to sign the 23-year-old left-back. The report states that the English sides will have to pay around £25 million to sign the Spanish international.
Madrid do not want to keep Reguilon despite his fantastic season last time around as manager Zinedine Zidane prefers his two options that he currently has – Marcelo and Ferland Mendy.
Reguilon’s current contract with Madrid expires in 2023, and he will have to move elsewhere for regular.
Sergio Reguilon to Tottenham – A top addition to the team
Sergio Reguilon had a fantastic 2019-20 season with Sevilla, where he played 38 games in all competitions for the club. He scored thrice and set up five goals for the club, and his good performances also earned him a call-up to the Spanish national team.
Reguilon, who is a quick and skilful full-back, likes to drive forward at every opportunity, using his speed and dribbling ability to advance to the final third. He averaged 1.6 dribbles per game in 31 league games in the 2019-20 season.
The Spaniard is a confident and quick passer of the ball, and uses his passing ability to help build attacks and even get out of tricky situations at the back. Reguilon is also good defensively, pressing hard and making key tackles, and averaged 1.8 tackles per game last season in La Liga. He is a player that can offer something in attack and defence, and is a lively player.
Tottenham would benefit hugely by signing a player like Reguilon who has loads of energy and ability. Jose Mourinho’s current options at left-back are Ben Davies and Danny Rose.
Davies is solid defensively, but doesn’t offer much in attack, while Rose doesn’t have a future at the club and is expected to leave. The other player who can play at left-back is youngster Ryan Sessegnon, who has also not featured much under Mourinho.
With Spurs lacking width and energy in the wide areas, a player like Reguilon could drive the team forward, and allow wingers like Son Heung-min to drift into central areas to support Harry Kane. The Spaniard is a young player who will only grow from here on.
