Southampton Eye A Transfer For All-Action Everton Ace: A Good Fit For The Saints?

Southampton are reportedly keen on signing Tom Davies from Everton. Davies, who has come through the ranks at Goodison Park, has played over 120 times for the club after making his debut for the Toffees in 2016.

As per TalkSport, Davies is a target for Southampton, who are also reportedly interested in signing Jovane Cabral of Sporting Lisbon, and Benfica’s Florentino Luis. The Saints want to take Davies on loan from Everton for the 2020-21 season.

The English midfielder still has three years remaining on his current contract with Everton. The 22-year-old central midfielder has played 123 times in all competitions, scoring six times and assisting the same number of times.

Tom Davies to Everton – A good fit in the Southampton midfield?

The Southampton midfield has had a new look in the 2020-21 season following the departure of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Tottenham. Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has used the midfield duo of Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse, but the two have been overrun in the first two Premier League games.

Romeu is a combative midfielder, who is a neat passer, while Ward-Prowse is an all-action, box-to-box midfielder, who is technically gifted and can put in excellent crosses and passes into the box.

But, Hasenhuttl doesn’t have too many other options in the middle of the park, with youngster Will Smallbone being the other option in midfield. With the season set to feature plenty of games in a short span of time, teams will have to rotate players to keep them fresh.

Signing Davies would be a good move by Southampton, and a much-needed one. The Toffees midfielder would add energy to the midfield as he is a player that likes to go from box-to-box, making smart runs with or without the ball.

The 22-year-old is clever with his passing in the final third, while he also contributes defensively with his pressing. Davies would be the perfect Hasenhuttl player, who demands his players to play high-intensity football and press the opposition.

Davies can play in a midfield three or part of a two-man midfield, and with his vast Premier League experience, he could make for a very good signing for Southampton, who desperately need more depth in their midfield.

Everton’s midfield is stacked at the moment, and Davies is certainly not Carlo Ancelotti’s first choice, so he needs to move to play regular football and continue his impressive development. He is a player with a good engine and ability on the ball, and would make Southampton a stronger team.
