After their disappointing and unlucky last-minute draw to Newcastle United in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur will host Chelsea in the EFL Cup on Tuesday. The north London club received a bye in the previous round of the competition, after their opponents, Leyton Orient, had to pull out of the match due to Leyton not having enough players to field.
Spurs were knocked out in the third round last season when they lost to Colchester United on penalties. They will have a tough test against Chelsea, who came from behind to grab a point against West Bromwich Albion over the weekend.
We could see manager Jose Mourinho rotate his squad as the north London side have three games in the next six days.
Let’s take a look at the possible Tottenham lineup for the game against Chelsea.
Early Team News
New signing Gareth Bale is still not available as he is out due to injury, while Son Heung-Min, who has been in great form lately, will also miss the game due to injury.
Japhet Tanganga is another absentee, while Moussa Sissoko is a doubt, having picked up an illness right before the game against Newcastle.
PREDICTED TOTTENHAM LINEUP vs CHELSEA (4-2-3-1)
Goalkeeper
Joe Hart, who has played in Spurs’ Europa League games, should start in goal, replacing Hugo Lloris.
Defence
Toby Alderweireld should come into the Tottenham lineup, partnering either Eric Dier or Davinson Sanchez. The latter could be preferred, with Dier likely to play the Europa League game in two days.
Serge Aurier should come into the starting XI at right-back, replacing Matt Doherty, while new signing Sergio Reguilon, who was an unused substitute against Newcastle United, could start at left-back in the Tottenham lineup.
Midfield
Mourinho could ring the changes in midfield as well, with Tanguy Ndombele playing in the middle of the park. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could start alongside the Frenchman, while the likes of Harry Winks and Gedson Fernandes are other options for Spurs.
Dele Alli should play the No. 10 role in the Tottenham lineup against Chelsea.
Attack
It will be interesting to see if Mourinho rests Harry Kane for this match or the Europa League game. Kane may start this game due to Son Heung-Min’s absence.
Steven Bergwijn and Erik Lamela should play on the wings for Spurs against Chelsea.
