Chelsea eyeing a big money move for English fullback: A smashing signing in the offing

Chelsea could make a swoop for Leicester City left-back, Ben Chilwell. The England international has been a long-term target for manager Frank Lampard, given the club’s recurring troubles at left-back.

As per Leicester Mercury, Chilwell has spoken to Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers and told him that he wants to leave the club. The report states that Leicester have put a price tag of £85 million on the full-back.

The 23-year-old has come through the ranks at Leicester City, making his debut for the club in 2015. His contract with the club expires only in 2024, which means that the Foxes can demand a big fee for him. Ben Chilwell has made over 115 appearances for the club, while also featuring 11 times for the England national team.

Ben Chilwell: A smashing move by Lampard?

One of the problem areas for Chelsea currently is left-back. Emerson and Marcos Alonso, Frank Lampard’s current options in that position, have not been nearly consistent enough, and we could see one or both of them leave the club in the summer. The Blues, who are set to spend heavily this summer following their transfer ban last year, have already secured the signing of Hakim Ziyech, and are apparently close to sealing a move for in-demand German striker Timo Werner.

The signing of a left-back – and perhaps a centre-back, would make Chelsea a very strong team in the 2020-21 season and could help them climb up the table and challenge for the title as well, given how well the new English emerging talent have fit in seamlessly in top-flight football.

The addition of Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell is a solid full-back, who is strong in the air, makes tackles and is quick to intercept passes, while also being good going forward. A composed passer of the ball, the Englishman is a player that can build attacks from the back while at the same time discharge his defensive duties to a tee.

The Blues should make a move for him and secure his signing, even if it means spending in excess of £50 million for him. Chilwell is just 23 years of age and can be a solid player for the club for the next decade or even more. Chelsea haven’t had a strong option at left-back since the departure of Ashley Cole, and Chilwell could fill that void.

With a strong English core in the team, especially young, talented flair players, Chilwell would fit in well in this young Chelsea squad and with Lampard at the helm, be a part of a potentially special era in the club’s history.
