Chelsea welcome German giants Bayern Munich to Stamford Bridge tonight, and Frank Lampard’s men will be in a buoyant mood after their dominant performance against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Blues will be in for a tougher fight than what Jose Mourinho’s team managed to put up as their Champions League opponents for Tuesday have been undefeated in their last 11 games in all competitions. In fact, Bayern have drawn just 1 of those 11 games, winning the remaining 10. The last time these two sides faced each other was in 2013 in the UEFA Super Cup, which ended 2-2, with the German side winning on penalties.
Let’s take a look at the possible Chelsea lineup for the game against Bayern Munich.
Team News
The big miss for Chelsea will be N’Golo Kante, who limped off during the loss to Manchester United ruling him out for three weeks. Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi may also not be fit enough for Tuesday’s game.
Tammy Abraham returned to the Chelsea squad after missing the game against Manchester United, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek returned to the squad against Spurs, for the first time this season.
Lampard may continue with the experienced Willy Caballero instead of Kepa in goal.
It will be interesting to see if Chelsea retain their three-man defence for the game against Bayern. The Germans also played a three-man defence in their win over Paderborn.
Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, and César Azpilicueta played as the three defenders against Spurs and we could see the trio continue in the Chelsea lineup. Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori are other options for Lampard at the back.
Reece James and Marcus Alonso should continue at right wing-back and left wing-back, respectively.
Emerson is another option at left wing-back, but following Alonso’s brilliant performance against Spurs, he could retain his place in the starting XI.
Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic were very good against Spurs, and they should continue in midfield. The injury to Kante has made it easier for Lampard to choose which two midfielders to pick.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be an option off the bench.
Willian could come into the Chelsea lineup in place of Ross Barkley, with the experienced Brazilian playing on the right side. Mason Mount should retain his place in the starting XI, playing on the left.
It will be interesting to see if Lampard brings back Tammy Abraham to the Chelsea lineup following Olivier Giroud’s fantastic performance against Spurs.
