Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is a target for Premier League side Wolves, as per reports.
The 24-year-old defensive midfielder has had another stellar season with the Championship side, and is perhaps their most important player.
As per The Sun, several Premier League sides, including Wolves, are interested in the Englishman. Burnley and Sheffield United could make a bid for him in the summer, who could reportedly cost over £20million.
The Leeds-born midfielder has made over 170 appearances for the side, scoring 10 and making 11 goals. He was linked with a move away from Leeds last summer, but stayed on and even signed a new contract which expires in 2024.
Phillips is a very good defensive midfielder who has earned a lot of plaudits from pundits, as well as his manager, Marcelo Bielsa.
The Englishman is a player who can sense danger and provides great cover to his central defenders, dropping into defence to retrieve balls, and can find his teammates with his impeccable distribution – an ability which has earned him the nickname of “Yorkshire Pirlo” from the Leeds fans.
Phillips has played as a defensive midfielder and central midfielder, as well as part of a back three, under Bielsa. His confident passing, as well as his great positional sense, makes him a good option in a team that likes to transition quickly from attack to defence. This season in the Championship, Phillips has averaged 2.8 tackles and 1.3 clearances per game. His style means he would fit in well under Nuno Espirito Santo.
He would be a great addition to the Wolves squad, who have been mighty impressive this season. Wolves are in the running to qualify for Europe next season, and if they do qualify for Europa League once again, they will need a strong squad.
Phillips would be a great alternative to Ruben Neves, Leander Dendoncker or João Moutinho in central midfielder, while he can also drop back to play in the three-man Wolves defence.
His versatility, passing, tackling, and vast experience will make him a good signing for Wolves. He could take over from Moutinho as the experienced Portuguese midfielder will turn 35 later this year, and may not have too many years remaining at the top level.
