Manchester United receive transfer boost in their chase of midfielder: Should they pursue?

West Ham United’s highly-rated defensive midfielder Declan Rice could be on the move, with Manchester United reportedly tracking him.

The 21-year-old has grown leaps and bounds over the last two years, but he could leave the Hammers to further progress in his career.

West Ham manager David Moyes dropped a huge hint recently about Rice leaving the club, comparing his situation with that of Wayne Rooney and Joleon Lescott when he was the manager of Everton (h/t Express).

Moyes said that selling players for a big price allowed him to strengthen the squad, and that he would like that to happen at West Ham if they sell Rice.

The England international has made nearly 100 appearances for West Ham in all competitions, and has won the Hammers’ Young Player of the Year award twice. His current contract with the club only expires in 2024, and the Hammers have the option of extending it by another year.

Should Manchester United go all out for Declan Rice?

Moyes’ latest comments will be music to the ears of his former club, Manchester United. The Red Devils have pursued Rice over the last year or so, but backed off after being priced out of a move by West Ham.

The defensive midfielder is strong and powerful, can win tackles and make key interceptions, in the deep-lying role that he plays at West Ham.

United need a few midfielders in their team, but should they pursue Rice, who has a huge transfer fee? I don’t think they should.

United already have their own combative midfielder in Scott McTominay, who has been integral to their team over the last year or so, while Fred has been United’s most improved player this season. Both of them can play the defensive role well, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s system also doesn’t require a player who plays so deep.

Nemanja Matic is another option for Solskjaer in the role that Rice plays in, with reports suggesting that United are willing to offer him a new deal, as his current contract expires in the summer.

United could maybe add another option in midfield, but not for the price that West Ham are quoting.  The club need to set aside funds to buy a top-class striker, as well as add a wide player and a defender, which is a priority for them, as well as a replacement for Paul Pogba, if he leaves.
