Manchester United linked with £50m move for English striker: Worth The Outlay?

Manchester United could make a shock move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has been in good form in recent games for the Merseyside club. The English striker joined the Toffees from Sheffield United in 2016 for just £1.5 million but could be set for a big-money move.

As per The Sun, United could make a bid of around £50 million to sign the 22-year-old player after missing out on the signature of Erling Braut Haaland, who has decided to join Borussia Dortmund.

Calvert-Lewin has scored 27 times in 115 appearances for Everton since his move from Sheffield United. The English striker’s contract with Everton expires in 2023 with the player having signed an extension in 2017.

The hard-working forward has drawn praise from new manager Carlo Ancelotti after his recent good performances for the Toffees.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Manchester United: Makes sense?

Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for Erling Braut Haaland which was expected given his past working relationship with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The 19-year-old sensation has scored 28 goals and provided 7 assists in 22 games across all competitions this season and was rightfully linked with a host of top clubs. But his decision to move to Borussia Dortmund to further his progress has now landed United with the job of identifying viable alternatives for the role of the striker.

It’s quite clear that a striker – along with a midfielder – is a priority for Manchester United in the next few transfer windows as they have yet to replace Romelu Lukaku. The likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial can play the striker’s role, but both of them have been inconsistent and have gone missing in games. Mason Greenwood is a striker that Manchester United have high hopes on, but it would not be fair to ask a teenager to be Manchester United’s main striker.

But, is Calvert-Lewin good enough to lead the line at Manchester United? I am not quite sure that he is. The young English striker is clearly talented, diligent and a selfless player but he hasn’t scored enough to warrant a move to Old Trafford, let alone a £50 million transfer. United need a striker who is mobile, can link play, as well as score bucketloads of goals, which is not the kind of player that the Everton striker is, especially at the quoted price.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs a more dynamic alternative even if he is not too experienced at the top level as Ed Woodward and co have shown the club is ready to invest long-term in youth.
