Wolves launch a £30m bid for Serie A defensive rock: A wise decision by the club?

Wolves have been very active in this summer’s transfer window, but are not done yet as they have been linked with Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani.

The Italian is reportedly a target for Wolves, who have made an offer of £30 million to sign him before the end of the transfer window in the Premier League.

According to The Times, Arsenal were keen on signing Rugani, but Juventus were unwilling to send him out on a two-year loan that the Gunners proposed.

Wolves’ offer will mean that the Gunners are no longer in the running to sign Rugani, who was expected to replace Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny at the club.

Rugani will be allowed to leave Juventus, bringing an end to a long association with the club that he signed for in 2013 in a co-ownership deal with Empoli.

The Italian has made 87 appearances for Juventus and has made 7 appearances for the Italian national team.

Juventus have several options in the centre-back position, including new big-money signing Matthijs de Ligt, which means that Rugani may not game time at the club.

A wise decision to go after Rugani?

Wolves have strengthened all across the pitch in the summer, including the centre-back position, signing Real Madrid’s Jesus Vallejo on loan.

Vallejo will be one of four options for Wolves manager Nuno Espírito Santo, the other three being captain Conor Coady, Ryan Bennett, and Wily Boly. In the Wolves’ system, where the team play with three centre-backs, they will need another option in the squad in case of injury or suspension.

Rugani would be a fantastic signing for Wolves, if the team can pull off the transfer. The Italian centre- back is technically sound, is very good in the air thanks to his 6’3″ frame, while he also has the composure and technique to bring the ball out from the back.

The Juve defender would fit perfectly alongside a stronger centre-back, who can make the tackles and win possession of the ball, while Rugani can distribute the ball and clear dangerous attacks.

The Italian is just 25 years of age, and has the potential to improve and could be a great value signing for the English side.
