Super Cup Hero A Doubt: Predicted 4-3-3 Liverpool Lineup vs Southampton

Newly crowned UEFA Super Cup winners Liverpool travel to the south to take on Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday, and it is likely to be a tough test for the Reds who were pushed by Chelsea this past midweek.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had to rely on penalties to beat Chelsea on Wednesday, and the conditions made it worse as several players were running on empty, and also suffered from cramps towards the end.

Liverpool started their Premier League campaign on a high, beating Norwich City 4-1. The Saints, on the other, hand were humbled 3-0 away from home by Burnley, and will want to put in a better performance against last season’s runners-up.

Liverpool Team News

The Reds will be without Naby Keita for the clash against Southampton, and Wednesday’s hero, Adrian, will also be assessed ahead of the game. The goalkeeper has a swollen ankle, and Klopp will hope he recovers in time for the game.

Should Adrian fail to recover, Andy Lonergan might come in for the Reds, and make his debut.

Predicted Liverpool Lineup vs Southampton

Defence

The defending hasn’t been as authoritative as last season, and part of the reason is that Klopp is experimenting with the backline. Against Norwich, the defence played higher, in a bid to catch the opposition team offside.

Virgil Van Dijk could start alongside Joe Gomez at the heart of the defence. Trent Alexander-Arnold, who came off the bench against Chelsea, should start as the right-back, while Andy Robertson will line up on the opposite flank.

Adrian will be the preferred choice if he is fit, else we might see Lonergan come in.

Midfield

Fabinho should keep his place in midfield as he is expected to recover for the clash. The Brazilian was suffering from cramps, but still managed to take his penalty and score on Wednesday. Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum are expected to complete the midfield three.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could also play a part, as he is more suited to a midfield role. His game could suit against a team like Southampton who like to press.

Attack

Sadio Mane looked good on Wednesday, and he should keep his place in the team after his brace. Mohamed Salah got on the scoresheet against Norwich, and he will be eager to score after drawing a blank against Chelsea.

Roberto Firmino’s impact was visible against Chelsea, and he should start against Southampton. He is yet to open his account for the season, and will look to change that come Saturday.
