Wolves readying a €6m bid for Serie A centre-back: A smart move in the offing

Wolverhampton Wanderers have a tricky 2019-20 season ahead of them as they will compete in the Europa League, which has historically been difficult to navigate for most Premier League sides due to the scheduling of the games. Manager Nuno Espírito Santo will need a strong squad next season to replicate the seventh-place finish in the 2018-19 season.

The Premier League side are reportedly interested in signing Lazio defender Wallace, who has been with the Italian club since 2016. Birmingham Mail are reporting that Wolves could sign the Brazilian for a fee of €6 million. Wolves have made one signing so far, completing the permanent signing of Leander Dendoncker from Anderlecht, who was on loan at the club last season.

Lazio signed Wallace in 2016 for a fee of €8 million, and the 24-year-old Brazilian has gone on to make over 60 appearances for the club since signing for them. The centre-back made 17 appearances for the Italian club last season but didn’t have a major impact for them. Wolves could have an upper hand in signing the player as Jorge Mendes, the super-agent who has close links with Wolves, is the agent of Wallace.

Good deal for Wolves?

Wallace is a promising player who is a good defender, with great ability in the air, while also being a player who reacts quickly to situations and makes key interceptions. In the 2018-19 season, he made an average of 1.9 interceptions each game, while making an average of 3.3 clearances in the league.

The Brazilian is also a player who likes to move forward at every opportunity, seeking his attacking teammates with long balls. He averaged 3.8 long balls per game last season, with an overall pass completion rate of 84.7%. The defender could potentially become a very good player for Wolves if he can sort out a few lapses in concentration in his game.

Wolves currently have three first-team centre-backs in Willy Boly, Ryan Bennett, and captain Conor Coady, and they will need to add at least one more central defender before the start of the season to give their manager more options. At a price of €6 million, Wallace could be a gamble that will most likely pay off, and Wolves must make a move for him ahead of the 2019-20 season.
