Sheffield United are readying a late move to sign Leroy Fer in order to beef up their ranks, it has been claimed.
The Blades have contacted free agent Fer who left Swansea City last month and Chris Wilder is keen to fly him in to discuss it further, it has been reported by The Sun.
Sheffield United earned their promotion to the Premier League after finishing second in the Championship last season and have been busy bringing in reinforcements this summer.
Wilder’s camp has already lured quality players like Lys Mousset, Callum Robinson, Luke Freeman, Ravel Morrison and Phil Jagielka to the Bramall Lane.
Notably, Eredivisie giants Feyenoord are also keen to make him sign on the dotted line and it will be interesting to see which club has the last laugh.
Fer spent his youth in the renowned academy of Feyenoord and eventually went on to represent their senior side before moving to fellow Dutch side FC Twente.
In the summer of 2013, he was introduced to English football after Norwich City signed him and after a season with the Canaries, he switched to Queens Park Rangers.
Swansea City roped him into their side, initially on loan, in the January transfer window of 2016 and he was eventually signed permanently at the end of the 2015-16 season.
The Dutch international made 25 appearances in the Championship last season for the Wales-based outfit and bagged a goal and a couple of assists.
While Sheffield United have spent substantially this summer, they might aim to acquire experienced players who are currently free agents or are available at a nominal price.
Wilder’s side do need additions in the central midfield region as John Fleck, Oliver Norwood and John Lundstram are his only options for filling the aforesaid department at the moment.
The 29-year-old has volumes of experience under his belt and could bring competition and depth to the Sheffield United squad if snapped up by them.
Fer has the calibre to cushion his side’s backline and can also get forward to create chances. He is good in the air, is decisive with his tackles and is undoubtedly a handy asset given his Premier League experience.
However, his career has been injury-laden and Wilder cannot bank upon him to be a regular option for him throughout the season and the player needs to be assigned a specialised role as they look to stay up in the top-flight this season.
