Everton midfielder James McCarthy has emerged as a transfer target for Newcastle United, it has been reported.
The Magpies are readying a bid of around £5 million to sign McCarthy, it has been claimed by The Sun.
McCarthy is in the final year of his contract, which is why the Toffees are trying to find a buyer. Newcastle will have to compete with Crystal Palace, who are also interested in McCarthy.
Newcastle have signed Joelinton for a club-record fee, but the Brazilian has been the only arrival so far and time is running out for the Magpies in the transfer window.
Last season, Newcastle had a patchy season, and under a new manager, they are likely to take a bit of time to get going, so the arrival of proven players like McCarthy could help.
McCarthy got his first taste of English football in 2009 when he joined Wigan Athletic, and after spending four seasons with the Latics, he switched to Goodison Park.
Although he was an instrumental figure in the middle of the park for the first couple of seasons, an awful injury derailed his campaign and he has never been able to break into the Everton team on a consistent basis ever since.
The 28-year-old mustered just one Premier League appearance last season for the Toffees, and is unlikely to get much playing time next season if he stays with the Merseyside outfit.
McCarthy, when he is fit and in form, would be a useful asset for Newcastle United. He is a tenacious midfielder who works incredibly hard, and is a shrewd reader of the game.
The Republic of Ireland international links the midfield and attack nicely with his vision and distribution. He’s a workhorse in midfield, and his work ethic will come in handy as Steve Bruce’s side aren’t expected to dominate possession.
Although Newcastle have some talented players in their squad, McCarthy’s experience could make him a good player to have in the squad, especially when the going gets tough next season.
McCarthy will favour a move to Tyneside as he will want to get more regular playing time to not fall down the pecking order for his national team as well.
Considering the experience and quality he has, it would be a pretty safe investment to go after McCarthy.
