Manchester United‘s second-costliest player of all-time, Romelu Lukaku, looks set to leave the club, with Inter Milan the likely destination, as per reports.
The Red Devils themselves are in the hunt for a new striker to replace the Belgian, and have lined up a shock bid for Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who joined the Gunners in the 2018 January transfer window.
Various reports in Italy, including FCInterNews, are reporting that Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants the experienced Gabonese striker to replace Lukaku in the Manchester United team.
The report claims that the Red Devils have made a bid of £62 million for the striker, who scored 31 goals in all competitions for the Gunners last season.
In the one and a half seasons that the former Borussia Dortmund striker has played for Arsenal, he has scored 41 goals in 65 games – which is quite impressive!
Lukaku, meanwhile, has scored 42 goals in 96 games in the last two seasons for Manchester United, scoring 15 in all competitions last year.
The Belgian hasn’t played either of Manchester United’s first two pre-season games, and will also not play the third pre-season game against Inter Milan in Singapore.
Manchester United’s interest in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is similar to their signing of Robin van Persie from Arsenal in Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season in charge of the club.
Van Persie, like Aubameyang, was at the top of his game, scoring consistently, and he helped United clinch the Premier League in his first season with the club.
Aubameyang could be a very good signing for Manchester United as he is a proven goalscorer – which has been lacking at the club over the last few seasons.
While Marcus Rashford is a phenomenal talent, he hasn’t shown consistency in his goalscoring, which is one area which he will have to improve in the 2019-20 season.
The signing of Aubameyang would only be a short-term solution as the Arsenal striker recently turned 30 and probably has just a few years at the top of his game.
However, his experience and goals could help the likes of Rashford, Anthony Martial, and even 17-year-old Mason Greenwood improve. Aubameyang also fits into the quick-paced style of football that Solskjaer is trying to implement at the club.
