Aston Villa face competition for midfield sensation: What should be their play here?

Aston Villa’s summer spending spree could rise further as they have been linked with a move for midfielder Tom Bayliss.

The Coventry City sensation has also attracted interest from West Brom and Sheffield United, as per the Sun.

Villa have already made seven signings so far and have been linked with moves for a host of players, as they look to begin the season with a strong squad that can survive the rigours of the top-flight.

Dean Smith’s side even broke their club transfer record when they signed striker Wesley Moraes for a fee of around £22 million.

Bayliss made his debut in 2017 and went on to have two good seasons for his side, helping them get promoted to League 1, and is touted to be a future star.

He made 41 appearances for Coventry in the 2018-19 season in all competitions, scoring thrice and making three assists as well.

What should Aston Villa do with Tom Bayliss?

The Aston Villa management are leaving no stone unturned in their goal of surviving the drop in the Premier League, backing their manager by making several key signings and splashing the cash.

The Villans need a few more players to strengthen their squad, but going after Bayliss is a surprising one. The highest level Bayliss has played is in League 1, which is a big drop from the Premier League, while he also has just two years of experience in professional football.

Bayliss is a good passer of the ball and likes to move it forward at every opportunity, but he may not be physically there yet to play in the Premier League.

Villa need a midfielder who has prior Premier League experience rather than a player who has the potential to be one in a few years’ time.

The team have two good midfielders in Conor Hourihane and John McGinn, but they need an experienced midfielder in the squad who has played in the Premier League previously.

Bayliss could be signed and sent on loan to get some experience, but he should not be thrust into Villa’s squad immediately as he is young and doesn’t have any experience in playing in top-flight football.
