Watford make contact with Uruguayan midfield ace: What will he add to the team?

Watford are keen to sign PSV Eindhoven midfielder Gaston Pereiro, it has been reported.

Pereiro’s agent Paco Casal has been contacted by Watford owner Gino Pozzo and technical director Filippo Giraldi over a possible move for the Uruguayan, it has been claimed by the Watford Observer.

Pereiro was heading to Serie A side AC Milan, but the interest from Watford has changed the complexion of any potential deal. Further, it has also been suggested that he will cost €20 million.

Watford showed good progress last season, and to ensure they don’t stagnate, the club needs to add more fresh faces in the summer so they can push further up the table next season.

Gaston Pereiro: Profile

Pereiro spent his youth career at Uruguayan outfits Racing Club and Nacional, and was eventually promoted to the senior side of the latter. Dutch giants PSV secured his signature in the summer of 2015, and he has been an instrumental player for them since.

In 27 Eredivisie appearances last season, the 24-year-old managed 10 goals and six assists. Although his side ultimately lost out in the race for the Eredivisie title, his creative prowess and knack to score goals didn’t go unnoticed.

Pereiro’s current deal with PSV expires next year and, he might be on the move this summer as the club will not want to lose him for free next summer or a lower fee in January.

A central midfielder who can play as a number 10 as well, Pereiro has also represented the Uruguayan national side nine times.

Is Pereiro a good option for Watford?

Pereiro’s strengths are picking holes in the opposition backline, as he has the ability to create chances. He averaged 1.5 key passes per game last season in the Eredivisie.

Strong at keeping hold of the ball, his composure allows him to link up well with his teammates in midfield as well as the attacking third.

Pereiro is a hard-working player, but his defensive contribution can improve.  Having said that, he only looks in one direction when he gets the ball, and has an affinity to maraud forward and test opposition ‘keepers, having recorded 2.3 shots per game last season as well.

The Hornets played some eye-catching football last season under Gracia, and someone of Pereiro’s ability would only add more potency to their attack.
