Liverpool linked with a transfer for midfield power-house: Do they need him?

Leicester City midfielder Wilfried Ndidi is attracting interest from the likes of Manchester United, and Liverpool as per reports.

While speaking about these transfer rumours, Ndidi said that he was flatted by the interest shown by these big clubs, but will concentrate on playing for his country at AFCON.

“I am flattered when hearing such a thing. It is very good to hear about that interest from big clubs, but there is nothing on the ground so I won’t care about it.

“I am focusing on AFCON with Nigeria now, and then pre-season with Leicester City. We have a great manager with ambition to compete with big clubs in the Premier League,” Ndidi was quoted as saying by Leicester Mercury.

Wilfried Ndidi – Profile

The 22-year-old signed from Belgian club Genk for a fee of £17 million in the 2017 January transfer window, and has become a key figure in the Foxes line-up.

Ndidi has made over 100 appearances for the side in all competitions, and has scored 6 goals in the process, though that’s not his strength.

In the 2018-19 season, Ndidi scored twice and made one assist in the 40 games that he played in all competitions.

Do Liverpool need Wilfried Ndidi?

Liverpool have several quality midfielders in their squad, and manager Jurgen Klopp rotated the midfield pretty well last season.

The German manager can choose between the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Naby Keita, captain Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and even Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to play in midfield.

Ndidi had a fantastic 2018-19 Premier League campaign as he finished the season with the most tackles in the league (143) as well as averaging 2.2 interceptions per game in the season.

Despite the midfielder’s impressive numbers, it doesn’t make sense for the Merseyside club to add another defensive midfielder to the side, who will most certainly want to be a key part of the team and play week in, week out.

Ndidi would fit the quick, pressing game that Jurgen Klopp employs, but the Reds have to strengthen in other areas of the pitch.

Adding a left-back and a striker should be Liverpool’s primary focus this summer.
