Everton midfield star linked with a surprise exit: Why the club can’t afford to lose him

Premier League side Everton have made quite a few big-money signing in the last few seasons, signing some top players from Barcelona and Manchester United.

Their best signing of recent times, however, Idrissa Gueye, who was signed by the Merseyside club from Aston Villa in 2016 for a fee of just £7.1 million.

The Senegal international has become one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe, let alone the Premier League, and several top clubs across Europe have tracked him and are interested in signing him.

Long-time admirers of the midfielder, Paris Saint-Germain, who were keen on bringing him to Paris in the January transfer window, are reportedly interested once again to sign the Everton player, as per Le10Sport.

The report states that a bid between €30-35 million could persuade Everton to sell the 29-year-old midfielder to PSG.

With Adrien Rabiot set to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the month, PSG need to add more steel to their team as they currently only have Marco Verratti and Leandro Paredes in central midfield, while Marquinhos has also played as a defensive midfielder.

Ander Herrera is rumoured to sign for Paris-Saint Germain soon, while Gueye could be the other midfielder that Thomas Tuchel signs before the start of the season.

Why Everton cannot afford to lose Gueye

Idrissa Gueye was undoubtedly one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League in the 2018-19 season.

The 29-year old averaged 4.3 tackles per game in the Premier League in the 2018-19 season (stats courtesy Whoscored) and made the second most tackles in the entire season at 142 tackles, while also ranking high in the interceptions made in the season.

Gueye has been a vital player for Marco Silva’s team, providing cover to the backline, while giving attacking players like Gylfi Sigurdsson and André Gomes the freedom to attack.

Everton need a player like Gueye to give the team the balance and tenacity in midfield, which they had lacked for quite a few years before his arrival.

Silva is building an exciting team with a mix of experience and youth, and the Senegalese midfielder will be an important player for them, and the Everton management should do everything to keep hold of him.

Retaining the core of the team will be crucial for the Toffees if they are to move forward next season, so retaining Gueye is pretty much a no-brainer.
