Aston Villa eyeing a move for versatile Dutch defensive ace: A good option for Smith?

Newly promoted side Aston Villa are eyeing a transfer for Huddersfield Town defender Terence Kongolo, it has been claimed.

The Villans have placed Kongolo on their radar and are apparently monitoring him from close quarters, it has been reported by Examiner Live.

Dean Smith is keen to improve his defence, following promotion to the Premier League, and Huddersfield’s relegation might help the Villans in their quest to sign Kongolo.

Kongolo’s ability to play as a central defender as well as a left-back could come in handy for AstonVilla.

Terence Kongolo: Profile

Kongolo emerged through the youth ranks of Dutch side Feyenoord and went on to establish himself as one of their most instrumental players at the back, after he was promoted to the senior team.

He didn’t have the same impact after his move to Monaco, and was subsequently sent out on loan during the second half of the 2017-18 season.

After his promising displays for the Terriers, Kongolo was signed by the club on a permanent deal for £17.5million. The 25-year-old made 32 appearances in the top flight last season.

Is Kongolo a good option for Aston Villa?

The Dutch international is a proven player, and he would certainly add more depth and improve the quality of Aston Villa’s squad. He is decisive with his tackles, commendable in the air and is pretty quick for a defender as well.

With the Lions in the need of another left-back, Kongolo’s ability to fill in the position should come in handy.

Kongolo mustered 2.3 tackles, 2 interceptions and 3 clearances per game on an average last season, and despite Huddersfield’s relegation, he personally had a pretty solid season at the back.

If he features as a full-back, Kongolo’s good burst of pace would come in handy on the counter-attack, a ploy Smith might have to use in the Premier League against the more possession-oriented teams.

Aston Villa will need all the experience they can get, and considering Kongolo has had more than a season’s experience in the Premier League, he would be a pretty canny acquisition by the club.
