Top 3 performers for Tottenham Hotspur in the 2018-19 season: Sissoko features

Tottenham Hotspur are arguably having their best season under Mauricio Pochettino this term. The Lilywhites finished fourth in the Premier League but will have an excellent opportunity to get their hands on the UEFA Champions League when they meet Liverpool in the final, next month.

Here are three players who have impressed for the north London giants this campaign.

Christian Eriksen

Dele Alli’s frequent absences due to injury have seen Christian Eriksen play a crucial role in the creative department. The Dane has often interchanged between a central midfielder and an attacking midfielder. And he didn’t disappoint in either role, having been involved in 20 goals in the league this term.

Eriksen’s ability to adapt to various circumstances made it easier for Pochettino to tinker with his midfield unit, even in the absence of key players like Eric Dier and Alli.

Additionally, his proficiency from set-pieces coupled with his ball-carrying quality has helped Tottenham, especially when facing stronger opposition. The 27-year-old has averaged over two key passes in the league – more than any other player in the team this season.

Moussa Sissoko

None has benefitted more from Tottenham’s injury crisis in midfield than Moussa Sissoko this season. The Frenchman saw his career at Spurs rejuvenated after being entrusted with the role in central midfield by Pochettino during the second half of the campaign.

Sissoko operated as a progressive midfielder in Tottenham’s double-pivot, where the ex-Newcastle star offered urgency and high-defensive work-rate. He also made a host of driving runs into the final third and helped his team in transition.

From a tactical perspective, Sissoko has been by far the most important player for Spurs this season. And with the way the much-maligned Frenchman has earned himself a key role in midfield, he definitely deserves some plaudits.

Heung Min-Son

Harry Kane ended the season as Tottenham’s top goal scorer with 17 goals. But, it was Heung Min-Son, who crucially stepped up to the plate when the English international fell twice due to injury.

Son ended up netting 20 goals in all competitions, eight of which came during Christmas and early February – at a time where Kane was injured. He scored in the first-leg win over Manchester City in the Champions League and followed that up with an important brace in the second leg that saw the Lilywhites knock the English champions out of the coveted tournament.

Son’s incredible form was also a key reason behind Tottenham finishing the season inside the top four and it’s probably safe to say that the South Korean international was one of the best players in Europe this season.
