Would signing this Serie A goal-getter be a gamble for Newcastle United?

Newcastle United have done admirably well in the 2018-19 Premier League season, staying clear of the relegation battle and are set to finish in a decent position once again.

After a fine first year back in the Premier League where they finished 9th, Rafa Benitez’s men have once again put in dogged performances in the league.

Benitez has built a team that has been solid at the back, but have not been helped by their attackers. The Magpies have scored just 36 goals this season, which is the fifth lowest in the league, and only behind the bottom four clubs.

The side has been dependent on Ayoze Perez and Salomón Rondón for goals, with 19 goals between the two players in the league, but the rest of the team have not contributed.

An attacker who can score goals is one area that they have to improve on next season, and they have been linked with former Manchester City and current Roma striker, Edin Dzeko, as per Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb.

The report suggests that Newcastle United could table a bid of around €10 million for the Bosnian in the summer, but they will have competition in the form of fellow Premier League club West Ham United.

Will Edin Dzeko be a good fit for Newcastle United?

Benitez is renowned for his tactical acumen, and has shown time and again that he can drill his sides to keep the opposition at bay.

The Magpies need a top-quality striker to add goals as well as provide a physical presence at the top of the field when they’re playing against tougher opposition, and a player of the experience and quality of Edin Dzeko fits the bill perfectly.

Dzeko has scored 13 goals for Roma this season and 7 assists. The Bosnian has Premier League experience, having played 5 seasons for Manchester City, scoring 50 goals in the league.

At 33 years of age, Dzeko may be nearing the end of his career, but his goal-scoring instinct is still quite alive. Benitez and Newcastle United would do well with a player of his calibre next season in the Premier League.

The Bosnian managed five goals in six Champions League appearances for Roma, which shows that he can still cut it at the highest level.

Though he might not be a player who can be used week in week out, he would add a lot more quality to the Newcastle attack.
