Manchester United are chasing after the signature of Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey, as per reports.
Partey’s current contract with the club expires in 2023, but a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano could be on the horizon.
According to Daily Star, Partey’s release clause has been revealed. As revealed by his agent, the Atletico Madrid star could cost €50 million this summer, with United and Arsenal both interested in his services.
Partey would be a smart addition to the Manchester United midfield for a number of reasons. The Red Devils are lacking any reliable options in holding midfield, especially with Nemanja Matic failing to maintain his consistency.
As for Scott McTominay, he is relatively inexperienced and whether or not he is ready to take on the mantle of regular first-team football remains a doubt. And with Ander Herrera set to leave the club once his contract expires. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be devoid of options in the holding midfield department next season.
Partey, in that regard, could be an excellent option given his robust style of play. As you would expect from any player groomed by Diego Simeone, the Atletico Madrid midfielder loves to throw himself into challenges. He has averaged two tackles per game during the 2018/19 campaign.
The Ghanaian international is also good at reading the game, having averaged 1.5 interceptions while his 185cm frame makes him quite challenging in the air. However, what makes him such an accomplished defensive midfield is his tenacity and willingness to win back possession for his team.
This could benefit a Manchester United side, who have evidently suffered due to their lack of awareness in central midfield. They have also failed to provide defensive cover for the backline, which is one of the key reasons behind them finishing the campaign with the worst defensive record in the Premier League top nine.
Hence, the addition of Partey makes sense. The Atletico Madrid star offers the much-needed urgency in midfield while his aggression and physical prowess will make him a tailor-made fit for Premier League. And for a fee of just €50 million, he is relatively cheap given the quality of the player.
However, it is unlikely Partey will be willing to switch from Atletico Madrid to Manchester United. The 25-year-old has already confirmed he loves his current club and if he leaves, he is likely to demand Champions League football – something United won’t be able to offer next season.
