Liverpool linked with a transfer for Spanish custodian: A good backup option?

Liverpool have been strong in all areas of the pitch in the 2018-19 season, but one area which they upgraded massively last summer was in the goalkeeping position as Alisson has proved his worth, almost taking the Merseyside club to the league title.

The Brazilian has played 50 games this season for Liverpool in all competitions – most by any Liverpool player in this season, which has seen Liverpool no. 2 Simon Mignolet receive a handful of appearances in goal.

And now it seems that Liverpool are looking for a replacement for Mignolet, who is likely to leave the club in the summer.

As per Goal, Liverpool are contemplating a move for West Ham United goalkeeper Adrian, who is out of contract in the summer.

The Reds were also linked with young Turkish goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir recently.

Could Adrian be a good backup option for Liverpool?

Adrian hasn’t been the first-choice goalkeeper under West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini as 2018 summer signing Lukasz Fabianski became the no. 1 and impressed consistently, thereby restricting the Spaniard to a back-up role.

Adrian played just 5 games for the club – 2 in the League Cup and 3 in the FA Cup. The Spanish ‘keeper joined the Hammers in 2013, and was an important player for the club before Fabianski’s arrival.

Liverpool currently have a world-class goalkeeper in Alisson and it seems that he won’t be dethroned from his spot anytime soon. The Merseyside club have two other ‘keepers who have played for the club a lot over the last few seasons – Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius, the latter who is on loan at Turkish club Beşiktaş.

Neither of them will want to play second fiddle to Alisson so there is a possibility that both may move away from Anfield before the start of next season.

Adrian could be a good backup goalkeeper for the Reds as he has significant Premier League experience and is a good shot-stopper.

The 32-year-old will be available on a free transfer, which means that Liverpool can gamble on signing the Spanish goalkeeper and provide cover for Alisson at Anfield.

Adrian’s overall experience will make him a valuable and dependable addition to the Liverpool team for next season, as he showed pretty good reflexes and was good with the ball at his feet during his heydays at West Ham.
