De Gea gets 4 while Shaw bags 7: Manchester United Player Ratings vs Arsenal

Manchester United suffered their first Premier League defeat under interim coach Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer as they slumped to a 2-0 loss at the hands of Arsenal.

The Red Devils were not clinical enough in the final third and a host of defensive errors allowed Arsenal to collect three points at the Emirates.

David de Gea (4/10): An awful error in the first-half allowed Granit Xhaka to score the important opener that turned the game on its head. The Spaniard was visibly a long way away from his best and needs to improve significantly in the coming weeks.

Ashley Young (6/10): Found it difficult to keep up with Sead Kolasinac in the initial exchanges. His versatility proved to be useful as Solskjaer utilized him as a right-sided centre-back in order to mirror Arsenal’s formation.

Chris Smalling (6/10): Looked quite committed and focused in stopping Alexandre Lacazette in the first-half. But, the English international lacked solidity after the restart and also failed to make an impact in the numerous set-piece opportunities they got.

Victor Lindelof (5/10): A clumsy display from the Swede, who was completely outclassed by the offensive duo of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Lacazette. His mistimed headed clearance in the second half almost led to a golden opportunity for Arsenal.

Luke Shaw (7/10): One of the better performers for Manchester United, as the former Southampton defender looked quite dangerous on his forays down his flank. He also did an excellent job of stopping Ainsley Maitland-Niles in his tracks with a few convincing tackles.

Diogo Dalot (5/10): His lack of experience at the highest level was telling as the young Portuguese struggled to provide any sort of creativity down the right flank. Should have been taken off much earlier.

Nemanja Matic (4/10): Failed to provide any security to the backline as the Serbian looked weak in dealing with the industrious Arsenal midfielders. Solskjaer could have persisted with McTominay for this high-profile match with the Serbian coming off an injury layoff.

Fred (4.5/10): It was a clumsy performance from Fred, to say the least. The Brazilian was woeful in his passing, though he came quite close in finding the equalizer, notably hitting the bar in the second half.

Paul Pogba (5.5/10): It was one of those nights where Pogba struggled to assert his dominance on the proceedings. He looked lost in the 4-3-3 formation and improved slightly when Ole tweaked his tactics later on.

Marcus Rashford (6.5/10): Dropped deep and ran at the opposition after collecting the ball but the English international was often closed down by Arsenal defenders very quickly while most of his passes were also intercepted.

Romelu Lukaku (6.5/10): His hold-up play was decent but the Belgian lacked support from his teammates and was very extremely poor in front of goal.

Substitutes

Anthony Martial (NA): Replaced Dalot in the 71st minute but should have been introduced much earlier.

Mason Greenwood (NA): Made his Premier League debut after replacing Matic in the 80th minute.
