Leeds United eyeing a transfer for goal-scoring midfielder: A good long-term move

Leeds United have been linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven attacker Justin Lonwijk, according to reports.

Lonwijk’s current contract with PSV comes to an end in the summer of 2019, and considering the teenager hasn’t signed a new deal yet, it’s likely that he’s considering the offers on his table.

According to Calcio Mercato, Leeds United are likely to face competition from AS Roma and Eintracht Frankfurt, two sides who have already made contact with PSV for the attacker.

Justin Lonwijk – Fact file

The Dutchman hasn’t made an appearance for the senior team yet, but has impressed for the PSV under-21 side so far.

Prior to making the jump to the Under-21 side, Lonwijk managed 20 goals and six assists for the Under-19 side, which impressed those at the club.

After making the grade to the Under-21 side, the 19-year old has made 24 appearances, and has scored six goals so far.

What will Lonwijk add to Leeds?

Still only 19, Lonwijk has a long way to go before he can truly break into the Leeds team and impress, if he does indeed sign for the club.

PSV have often gone with a 4-2-3-1 system under Mark van Bommel, and the youth sides have used the same set-up with two central midfielders and one attacking midfielder.

Most of Lonwijk’s playing time has come in the attacking midfield position, and he can be deployed in a deeper role if needed or on the wings.

Mohammed Ihattaren, another teenager, has been preferred by PSV because of how well he has done in the number 10 role, and Lonwijk is a very similar kind of player.

Lonwijk likes getting forward, which is why he has managed to get a good number of goals from the midfield position. Bielsa’s side need a goal-scoring midfielder even though Mateusz Klich and Pablo Hernandez have managed a combined 15 goals from midfield as the competition will be sterner in the top flight.

Lonwijk is quick, likes to dribble and because Leeds’ quick tempo and style of passing would suit him.

The issue is he is yet to really play top-flight football, so if he does move to England, he will take a bit of time to adjust with the pace of the league and would be a signing for the future.

If the Whites can get their hands on the player for a free transfer, he would be a more than decent addition, though.
