Uninspiring Performance: Southampton Player Ratings vs Arsenal

Southampton were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal and remained in the relegation zone at the end of matchday 27.

Here are our Southampton player ratings from their loss against Unai Emery’s men.

Angus Gunn 6/10

It was Gunn’s performance between the sticks that prevented things from getting worse for his side. He made some good saves, and denied Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the second half.

Jan Bednarek 7/10

Arguably the best player for the Saints today, Bednarek did well against Lacazette.

Jack Stephens 4/10

The centre-back was in tatters in the first half and gifted Arsenal the second goal. He was rightfully replaced at the interval.

Jannik Vestergaard 6/10

He showed good work-ethic and stopped the likes of Stephan Lichtsteiner and Mkhitaryan from causing further damage. Mustered the best pass accuracy among the three centre-halves.

Matt Targett 6/10

The left wing-back did manage some surging runs down the left but couldn’t do anything spectacular. Showed his tenacity and won three aerial duels.

James Ward-Prowse 6/10

He came close to scoring, but failed to find the back of the net. Nonetheless, he did his basics right and was good with his passing.

Oriol Romeu 6/10

While Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira dominated the midfield in the first half, Romeu emerged as an influential figure during the second half.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 7/10

Worked hard, and pushed his side forward. Won three tackles in midfield.

Yan Valery 5/10

Valery was troubled by the pace and clever movement of Alex Iwobi in the first half. However, he had a stronger second half.

Stuart Armstrong 5/10

Another Southampton player who failed to make his presence felt, Armstrong struggled to breach Arsenal’s back-line and was substituted at half time.

Nathan Redmond 6/10

The striker missed an early opportunity and apart from that, he was more of an isolated figure up front.

Substitutions

Charlie Austin 6/10

After coming on for Stephens after the break, he brought a lot of energy to his side’s attacking endeavours.

Michael Obafemi 5/10

He replaced Armstrong as Hasenhuttl threw all his offensive cards, but he had little impact in the game before getting injured.

Mohamed Elyounoussi 5/10

The winger came on for Obafemi but couldn’t produce any moment of magic.
