Tottenham Hotspur want Bundesliga defensive superstar: A smart move by Poch

Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter, according to reports.

Ginter has been one of the most impressive defenders in the Bundesliga this season, and as per Sky Sports, the Lilywhites are scouting the German international.

However, Spurs might face stiff competition from arch-rivals Arsenal, who are also keeping an eye on the Gladbach defender.

Ginter has transformed Gladbach’s defence and would be a smart buy

Tottenham arguably have the best defensive unit in the league, but things could change as the Lilywhites brace for a potential squad overhaul in the summer.

They have already triggered the one-year contract extension in Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen’s contracts that will keep them at the club until 2020.

However, there is a lot of speculation regarding the long-term future of Alderweireld, who has a clause in his contract that will allow him to leave the club for just £25 million in the upcoming summer.

Vertonghen, on the other hand, is already in the final phase of his career, meaning the addition of a new centre-back will be necessary for the Lilywhites in the long run and Ginter, in that regard, is an appealing target.

Following a dreadful spell at Borussia Dortmund, Ginter has found immense success under Dieter Hecking this season. The 25-year-old has made 15 appearances, with Gladbach registering only two wins in the five matches he missed.

The former Freiburg defender is known for his dogged defending, having averaged 4.5 clearances per game this season.

Indeed, the German is a no-nonsense defender, whose commitment and fighting spirit has sparked life into the Gladbach defence this campaign.

Ginter can keep up with his marker quite well, which makes him a class apart from Davinson Sanchez, who has often faced criticism for his lack of concentration.

The 25-year old’s passing has also improved in recent years, with the defender attaining an excellent pass completion rate of 88%.

But, what makes Ginter such an appealing target for Spurs is his aerial prowess as the German international has won a whopping 2.7 headed duels per game this season.

Considering Ginter’s age and the way he has performed this season, he could be a smart buy for the North London giants as they look to strengthen their team in the summer.
