West Brom linked with a transfer for versatile Championship ace: A player they need?

West Brom are keeping close tabs on Ipswich Town defender Jonas Knudsen, it has been reported.

Knudsen’s contract at the Portman Road is due to expire at the end of the season and although he has been offered an extension, he is keen to move.

Ipswich are expected to let him leave in the ongoing transfer window instead of losing him for free in the summer, and West Brom are said to be interested, according to a report by Birmingham Mail.

The Blues signed Callum Elder on loan from Leicester City earlier this month, and subsequently, Knudsen has not been needed in the last four games.

Apart from the Baggies, Middlesbrough and Stoke City are also reportedly keeping close tabs on Knudsen and it will be interesting to see what churns out for him in the coming days.

Jonas Knudsen: Profile and attributes

Knudsen emerged through the youth ranks of Danish outfits Hjerting IF and Esbjerg fB and eventually went on to represent the senior side of the latter.

In the summer of 2015, he switched to Ipswich and has been a valuable player for the team. The Dane has also represented the national side seven times.

The 26-year-old has featured in 23 Championship games so far this campaign, and has mustered 1.7 tackles and 3.5 clearances per game on an average.

Predominantly a left-back, Knudsen is versatile enough to operate as a centre-back. He is good in the air as well and would be a good versatile addition to the West Brom.

Although Knudsen doesn’t provide a great deal of offensive prowess, he does get forward whenever there is an opportunity, and is a good crosser of the ball.

Should West Brom sign him?

Darren Moore’s side are in the race for promotion to the Premier League and they do need reinforcements this month to help them push for promotion in the coming months.

However, left-back isn’t an urgent area of concern for Darren Moore. Kieran Gibbs has made the left-back spot his own and has been fantastic for the Baggies.

Gibbs is vastly experienced, and a very competent full-back. Moore also has Conor Townsend in to call upon as a back-up for Gibbs.

There are other areas that West Brom need to focus on at the moment.
